Porting American number?

I’ve been here for 5 months now in the U.K.  I tried when I first got here to do the porting my number thingy and have it go to google voice on my U.K. phone. But it said that an American number can only be done to another American number on google voice. So this whole time I’ve been dealing with 2 phones and paying an international plan on my American one. I’m kind of tired of it now. Can anyone help me or point me in the direction of an easy to follow way of doing this? I just want one phone, my U.K. one....and to have any calls and texts going to my American number forwarded to the one phone. Help! 😬

I would have thought so friends and family in the US could still call her easily, no?

Yep, I want to keep it because I’ve got family and business connections still in America. It just makes things easier.

If you don’t mind changing your number get a virtual number such as https://www.virtualphone.com

Depending on your usage you can get calls/texts/voicemails directly to an app installed on your smartphone. Pricing ex. $9/mo for 500 mins or 500 texts billed annually.

I set up a US Skype number to receive incoming calls from folks in the US, cheap and easy to use. When someone calls it first rings on my Skype app which is free if I answer,  and if I don’t answer within a minute it rolls over onto my UK number at a cost to me of 2.5c / min. (The rollover option is configurable )

I have been struggling with this question as well. I have a US number and a UK one (separate plans for each), since I travel back and forth a few times a year for business. When I fly, I pop the other SIM card in and I can make calls, access the internet, etc, once I land. The problem is that the US number is super expensive, and my business associates contact me through Skype or email while I'm in the UK. I tried switching to the cheapest plan at Verizon, but that's apparently what I have.

I'd like to keep my US number, if possible. Does anyone know a cheaper/easier way to do this?

I use callcentric.com  and have the same USA number we've had for over a decade. You can choose from various calling plans, and you can set it up to have the number forward automatically to your UK number. We have a pay-as-you-go plan, where I pay $2.95 a month for my US number and to use the service. If a call comes in, it immediately forwards to my UK number (or I can set it to voicemail, with an email notification option), or I can set it to ring a separate phone here.  I'm charged literally a couple of pennies a minute, but there are plans where you pay bit more up front and there are no per-minute charges, I believe. I like the ability to download various usage and billing reports, and to block specific numbers.  You can have several extensions on the one main phone number, as well. There is a user-friendly dashboard where you can set everything up.

I  use my old USA landline handset here, connected to an adapter on my computer, to make calls on it as if I was in the States. (There are interfaces to use it on your computer/tablet, etc., but I prefer a handset with the American ring.) As noted above, I can also set calls to come directly to this phone, and they ring in the typical one-ring USA style so I know I've got a USA call coming in. (Useful if I'm waiting on an important call, but I usually have it sent to voicemail and just call people back, due to the time difference, after having gotten several 2:00am calls when I had it set to ring separately or forwarded to my UK number.)

They have only recently had SMS capability and I don't do text messages, so I'm not sure how that would work for you overseas, but I think there's an ap that you can put on your cell phone and you can send and receive them via that ap no matter where you are. They're pretty good about answering emails within a day, though, so you might check with them to see if they have something that would work for you.
