Repatriating cats to US

Just trying to stay ahead of potential eventualities here, but has anyone recently repatriated pets to the US and know what paperwork/requirements are? They are good for the EU, but if we go back to the US I want to ensure we are prepared between now and end of March with their shots all up to date and any papers ready just in case. Or at least a knowledge of what needs to happen.

Well, it looks like the hamster would be good, in any event. 

It's really easy to bring pets to the USA.  My cousin said her cat could have been a rabid raccoon and they wouldn't have cared.     She brought her cat back from South Korea.

I'm somewhat annoyed that a dog can fly "in cabin" on so many of these but a hamster has to go as cargo!!!

How do you even load a hamster on as cargo? I mean the cage can't be that big, couldn't it get lost or just sort of roll around in the hold? 

Thanks guys for the info. Sweden barely glanced at the cats + paperwork when we entered, the UK didn't care when they came through via road, so can't imagine there would be much of a huff from the US. Also, these two boneheads would be going back to Wisconsin, which apparently has bigger animals to worry about on a bigger scale than two lazy housecats.
