Moved back to the US, do I need to do anything with UK taxes?
« on: August 17, 2018, 01:39:10 AM »
Hey everyone. I have very limited information but I hope someone can help me. I lived in the UK for five and a half years. I seem to remember getting a check from HMRC every year with a tax credit. I worked full time while I lived in the UK. Last year, in September, I moved back to the US. I worked for my old company up until maybe June of last year and then took some time off before leaving the country. I remember a roommate who I no longer have contact with recommended that I "do my tax credit" before leaving the country. Okay, so here's where it gets tricky to explain.

I remember going onto the HMRC website before leaving the UK. I seem to recall a section on there that had to do with applying for a tax credit if you're leaving the UK permanently...I also remember going into that page of the website and seeing a notice basically saying that if you plan on leaving the UK, to wait to apply for any tax credits until you're settled in your new country. So I did. And basically forgot about it until recently. Now, I can't remember enough about UK taxes to even know where to begin. I've looked on the HMRC website again and see nothing about someone who used to live and work in the UK applying for a tax credit.

If anyone has any clue at all about what I'm talking about, let me know. Basically I just want to make sure that everything is squared away with me and the UK taxes...and like I said, I remember always getting a tax credit in the mail each year. So if it's possible there's a check floating around with money for me...is it wrong to want to track that down?  ;) Thanks guys.
