Do I have to pay taxes in both countries?
« on: October 01, 2018, 05:10:38 PM »
I live in the UK on a spousal visa. I am an independent contractor for a Chinese-American company, and I work 100% remotely. I am paid in USD, and my salary is deposited into my US bank account. This is my only job. My husband works for HM Forces, and of course he pays tax.

I know I'll have to pay US taxes, but I'm very confused on if I'll need to pay UK taxes too? I've scoured HMRC and can't get my answer.  I realize that my situation is more unique.... any advice would be appreciated.

If the employer is not withholding UK PAYE, you primarily owe UK tax.  I am not clear why you would owe any US tax on foreign source income providing you make a payment to HMRC by 31 December each year. You may still owe US Federal and/or State tax on income attributable to US workdays.
