Travelling to the US with Non-US Partner
« on: October 02, 2018, 10:57:24 AM »
Hi all!

At the end of November, my partner and I will be visiting my family and travelling in the US for a little more than a month. We have been living in the UK (together) for a little over two years, but we have no plans to return to the UK after this trip (we are going to travel for an indefinite period of time...)

My partner has dual EU/Australian citizenship (he has been living in the UK on his EU passport) and has had a steady job while living here, but he will have quit it by the time we enter the US. He does have a return flight booked to Australia from the US when we are planning to leave, however. I am just a little bit worried that this will raise some eyebrows with CBP, seeing as he has no "ties" to his home country or his country of residence.

I am also a little bit confused about which line we should go through when clearing customs. Do we go together (as we live together, but are not married) through the non-citizen line? Does he go through that line by himself and I go through the US citizen line by myself? Any clarification would be really appreciated...I already emailed CBP and received an incredibly unhelpful response.

Sorry for all of the questions and thanks in advance!

They want you to stay together when travelling together, so go through whichever line is shortest.

As he has an onward flight, I can't see it being a problem in the least.  Especially if he has proof of enough funds to support his trip.

Perfect! Thanks! That is what I was thinking, you just hear horror stories about US customs so wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing  :)

Customs are the people who monitor the goods you are bringing in and out of the country.  Border control monitors the people.

We've always had good experiences with US Border Control.  Hopefully you will too.  :)

This is what my (unmarried) partner and I did in August when we travelled to see my family. There was some confusion because border control assumed we lived in America and had been on holiday in the UK, so they asked to see his green card and everyone was flustered in explaining that he didn't have one (the agent had asked me to step away from the desk to ask him questions, and he didn't know what a green card was, so I ended up stepping back in). Otherwise, we went through the US Citizens line with only one landing card.
