Coming over twice this year
« on: January 06, 2019, 05:26:44 AM »
I'm so excited. We are already coming over for 3 weeks in July and will be up in Newcastle for my husband's cousin's wedding then down visiting towns outside of London to see where we might want to move to when we move over here.

But then in December, my work let me know our group would be going to our London office for a big week long meeting! So I'm going over from Jan 17-27 as well! This will be a great time for me to meet a lot of the team over there and put faces to names so that when I do start applying for positions in that office, they'll actually know who I am. It also helps that I'm planning the entire trip for our team (hotels, lunches, dinners, schedules, etc.).

I can't wait to move over and this will really give me a lot more time to get things prepped. It'll also give me my first time taking a train over there as I'll be taking a train from London up to Newcastle for a couple days to visit my husbands family and then back down to London for work.

Buy a train ticket in advance to make sure you get an assigned seat!! The East Coast mainline can be really busy - I used to have to sit on the floor from London to Leuchars (in Scotland).

Happy travels!

Pleased that you'll be able to make two trips over :)

RE meeting the London office staff, all I can do is reinforce the need to network, network, network! Definitely casually drop in (if they don't already know) that you'll be moving over and maybe do the whole "any tip for applying for jobs?" or something along those lines. Try and stay in contact with those you get along with as well (assuming they aren't people you're working with on a regular basis).

Looks like 2019 is definitely going to be filled with fun for you already :)

Kate: Yup! Train ticket already purchased. I had read that its best (and cheaper) to buy early so I did. Plus... I'm a planning nerd and like to have everything buttoned up well in advance. :) Hell, I booked our rental car for our July trip back in November and out of curiosity I checked again to see if prices were different and they went up. So I'm glad I reserved when I did. Plus, I didnt have to pay yet so no harm in reserving.

KissOfDeath: Totally! I had already planned on visiting some of the people I already know there in July but now that I'm going later this month, all the better. And my boss (who is coming this trip) already knows about us moving and is supportive. She brings it up to people in the UK office whenever they are in town as well. Its SO REFRESHING to have a supportive boss. The office is not nearly as big as the one here in Seattle which is nice but I don't work with all of the teams over there regularly so it'll be good to actually meet some of them. And a lot of people move from team to team a lot so even if there is no one I know today, in 3 months from now there may be.

It's hard to NOT want to be there right now but I feel everything is happening at the right speed. And it'll all happen when the time is right. I'd rather suffer a little anticipation rather than rush it and regret something. As long as there is continued forward momentum toward the move, I'm happen. :)

That's an excellent attitude to have IMO. Also, yay for having a supportive boss! :D

Newcastle (what I saw of it) is nice. We stayed in the Hampton right at the central train station, and it was really convenient. Still getting used to (going on close to two years in the UK now) the sidewalks (except for restaurants and bars) rolling up at 6:00pm.

How fun for you to get to go to London! The British Museum and the Victoria & Albert, and the Natural History Museum, are spectacular.
