US-registered funds with UK Reporting Status
« on: January 15, 2019, 05:00:14 PM »
Hi all,

I've filtered the list of HMRC-provided funds with UKRS down to those that are registered in the US. I did the filter by simply a) excluding funds with an "end date" and b) excluding funds that did not have a 9-digit CUSIP identifier. I think (b) is the dodgy one, so please let me know if anybody has a better idea. I've included the list of funds below. Anything I am missing?

Really helpful; thanks. I haven't looked in some years; but I thought Dimensional had a bunch of funds too? https://eu.dimensional.com/de/historical-statements-of-reportable-income

Very cool swirlsilt, and permit me to add some comments since this is what I do all day.

The question is - can you construct a modern portfolio with these building blocks? Because if you can't, you go to the alternative, buying securities directly.

Suppose you have a low risk GBP based portfolio design - you need therefore UK fixed interest (short), preferably no financials because of contagion risk not yet fixed, international fixed interest being CAD, AUD and USD, (maybe some zeros but nothing less than 'A'), utilities, perhaps property but only if the yield is not being artificially vamped via re-valuations, and then some shares that you think are 'value' (if you're following Graham/Buffett). However you twist and turn with that list, you're going to be off the optimal just on asset allocation and (currency) risk grounds by a percent or two per year, as a 10 year trend.

Let's say you decide that buying the whole market is good enough and anyway who has the time? so you try and replicate the asset allocation of one of the Sovereign funds like Norway's. You still can't. You can do bits of it well enough, like Vietnam, and the US small cap 'value'. You can't do 'green', 'no armaments', 'no tobacco' 'no gambling'.

So I usually end up buying direct securities for the bits I can't cover in the list provided. I like this for two reasons - it's less annual charge for the client and I've already got the best buys list of shares and bonds.  The question now is - where can you fellows get a list of securities quickly and easily. Just choose a fund that you like and look through their top 10 holdings. Some firms (ours included) sell their research for a modest monthly fee.

Last time I looked at a (new) customer's portfolio he had attempted to short cut everything by buying one of Vanguard's four in one indexes for his 401k. Wasn't bad actually. His UK SIP was in cash, so he was trying to market time as well. It was a confusing mix of styles.
