Question about qualifications
« on: July 15, 2005, 02:17:09 PM »
When a posted vacancy mentions a requirement for 'Highers' or HNC/HND qualifications, how do these compare to educational levels in the US? For instance I have a bachelor's degree from a US university. Is that equivalent to a 'Higher'?

Thanks

An HND is something called a Higher National Diploma (HNC is a Higher National Certificate, I think). A Diploma is slightly lower than a degree here - a degree is level 3 - and takes 3 years....a HND is level 2 and takes 2 years. Some US degrees are not considered 'equivalent' to UK Degrees (I know they take you longer, but we work harder :D) there are sites which will tell you about equivalence, but you'd be fairly safe if you have a good degree from a good university in a relevant subject, especially if the advert is just asking for an HND.......'Highers' usually means some form of (what we call Higher education) which would be a degree or a HNC or HND.

Confused yet?

I believe that US degrees take longer because students spend one or two years taking courses in a wide range of subjects to get a broad, general knowledge of liberal arts and sciences  and usually don't really start focusing on their topic of interest till the end of the second or third year.  While students at uni in the UK start focusing on a concentration earlier.

Well, that's what I have heard. Feel free to correct me if I'm wroing.

Yes, you're right..........it's not really a comparable system......the first year of an American Degree course is probably more like our A levels.

Okay, that gives me a better idea of what they're looking for. Thanks!
