Turbo Tax
« on: January 20, 2019, 03:01:06 PM »
Ok, so I have most of what I need to file, so I thought I'd do a preliminary on TurboTax. I should have qualified for the free version. However,

1)They now have it set so that to deduct student loan interest you have to upgrade to their paid version. (strike one)

2) It is including  my social security payments as income, although I live in the UK.  US SSA paid to a USC resident of the UK are exempt from IRS tax. I can't see anywhere to put "non-taxable income" and list the SSA. (strike two)

3) My Cal taxes, which should also have been free, are now not free because of the upgrade. (strike three)

So, I'm going to check H&R Block now to see how they are handling it. I'd really rather just file electronically than deal with sending it via postal mail.

Edit:  Nope, looks like H&R block won't let me use the free file because I'm too old.  >:(

On the good side, I just did the taxes longhand. So there's a form to print out that says I'm at a foreign address (Schedule 6). This is in addition to my address being listed on the 1040.   1040 form is 2 half-page sheets.  SS was reported there, and also as non-taxable there.  (Not sure why it's not just one page.) Schedule 1 was necessary to list my student loan interest. So It took like 10 minutes, only because I had to do the reading.  Would still rather "e-file" though.

Schedule 6 is compulsory for anyone with a foreign address.  It reports the postcode and country. These no longer go on page 1 of the 1040. There is however no rush. We don't even know the IRS unofficial average exchange rates for 2018 yet. A US income tax return for 2018 is due to be filed by 17 June 2019; but can easily be extended until 16 December 2019 if necessary by filing an IRS Form 4868 by 17 June - followed by writing a letter to the IRS by 15 October 2018.  An FBAR for 2018 must, however, if needed be filed with the US Treasury by 15 October 2019.

Neither of us are taking SS at present but I just did a test on TT and I also cannot figure out how to exclude it from taxation should we be taking it. (We are old enough to take it but are waiting until Full Ret Age.

Schedule 6.
I'm sure there is some logic to this, but I fail to see why it would be necessary to have an entirely separate sheet to indicate a foreign address.
