US tax help
« on: February 09, 2019, 11:55:02 AM »
I finally got my W-2s from my last job in the US. I want to get my taxes filed and off my mind. I think I have this right but if any tax gurus want to chime in that would be wonderful.

I earned a little over $11,000 (above threshold so i have to file)
I was married 26/02/18 so I will file as married filing separate
I did not have $10,000 in my US bank account at any time in 2018 so no fbar
I still have no job here so no UK income to consider
I do not have to pay taxes on the life insurance death benefit from my fathers insurance policies (but do I list it somewhere?)
Can I e file as I have in years past? (I use H&R Block)

Missing anything?

The filing threshold is $5 of income so you are correct you have to file. It is impossible from the data provided to know if you have an FBAR filing requirement. All the Federal tax forms you may require are or will be available at the IRS website for free.

Sounds like you will be able to efile easy enough. I will point out that your post referred to your US bank account never having more than $10,000 in it. FBAR is for foreign bank reporting not US banks You need to check the aggregate balance of your UK accounts never exceeding $10,000, using the official  Treasury Rate for Dec 31st.

Ah ok. My UK account had never had more than £100 in it at any time so no worries there.

If you are on any joint accounts, those will have to be counted, as well.  And it's combined total of all foreign accounts, not the individual balances.  So if you have $100 in yours, and you were put on your partner's account (for example) and at any point that other account had more than $9900, you have to file FBAR.  But if you are not named on any other accounts, no worries.

We have a joint one I'll double check but very little is on it at any time. We only have it to use for correspondence for the next visa round  :)
