If you have no possessions or savings, you don't need a will. If you want to leave directions on who gets what, you need a will.
Be aware that in different states (in the USA) your options may vary as to what you can do with your estate. There's also living trusts ( I don't know the UK tax implications for a UK citizen) that in some states would allow you to put your home into the trust, so that when you pass away it simply becomes administered by the next trustee - aka, your spouse, whomever, who can then live in/manage the home without any sort of probate, etc. You'll want to check state law and maybe talk to someone about estate planning in the state in which you reside, I'd think?
