Do I need an NIN?

I have been working here in the UK since October 2003, but since I am getting paid from my US employer (who will be charging back my UK employer sometime in the near future), I have not as of yet had to get an NIN number.  But should I get one?

I am assuming I will have to pay UK taxes for the 2nd half of the 2003/04 UK tax year, and I am not sure if they will require me to get an NIN number either.

I am not quite clear on what you're saying. If you are paying tax on your income in the UK then you need a NIN.  If you are being paid in dollars in the US then you don't and I wouldn't think you would have to pay tax in the UK on those earnings either but don't quote me on that.

I suggest calling down to your local job centre and asking them about this. I think (but like Liz, am not certain) that if you're being paid in dollars, you should only have to pay US taxes.
