Principal Country of Employment
« on: June 07, 2020, 11:48:11 AM »
Hello,

I am using TurboTax to file my US taxes for 2019. I arrived in the UK on June 9, 2019 and am using the physical presecence test for excluding my foreign earned income. I have come to the question "Principal Country of Employment     Enter your principal country of employment during 2019" and am confused about how to answer and can't find any official guidance about it (including on the IRS's official instructions for form 2555). I worked for more days in the US in 2019, but I lived in the UK for more days. I feel like this makes the answer the US, but it also feels like it should be UK as that's where I am now. Does anyone have any light they can shed on this? Thanks in advance for your help!

My son was in a similar situation when he moved to the UK in September, 2017.  I am going to attempt to attach a couple of screenshots, but he answered "United States" to the question you mention and got the full FEIE refund. Before that question is a statement that the IRS requires these questions but it won't affect the tax outcome.

Thank you so much! That explains why there was no guidance on it, if it's just for information purposes.
