US tax reform means Child Tax Credit now gone?
« on: October 02, 2019, 05:16:32 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just hoping someone can answer a question about US taxes and the Child Tax Credit in my 1040 (and Additional Child Tax Credit on schedule 8812) because I can only find posts about this from a few years ago. I file as Head of Household (NRA husband - we have one child), but it appears that I am no longer able to claim any credits for my child because we do not live in the USA (I have ILR in the UK, child dual UK/US citizen).

Is this correct that Paul Ryan's tax reforms now doesn't allow for these tax credits to be claimed unless you' live in the States? And was it also the case last year (for 2017)?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for any replies.  :)

Thanks, Nan. It is kind of helpful, but although my child qualifies according to that, there seems to be an issue when I actually fill in the forms, because it explicitly says that the dependent child must have lived with you in the United States for at least half of the year (along with the other criteria). So I was just wondering if others have now (just starting recently, after the tax reform) also discovered that their child can't be claimed anymore? Or perhaps I'm doing it wrong.
