Help with 2nd year taxes
« on: February 01, 2020, 05:21:52 PM »
So last year I filed my taxes married but separate and physical presence tax exclusion.

Since I don’t work in the US I don’t think I will get a tax return, but I work here in the UK so how do I do my taxes?

You have to calculate the annual income from your pay stubs (Jan 1 2019-December 31 2019) because the two tax years are different. Don't forget to include any pension contributions from your employer too. You likely won't have any income tax due in the US but still need to file. (I am not a tax expert, so others may have more to add.)

You get an automatic extension to June 15. You can request to extend that if needed.

So do I have to wait until April for the UK’s taxes or just file them any time before June 15?

Just file them before June 15. The paperwork you get in the UK in April such as P-60s  is of no use since it summarizes the UK tax year and IRS filing is calendar year.

Is it form 2555 that I would be filing?

Possibly.

If the only UK income you have is earned income then you can use form 2555 to exclude it all. If you have other income in addition to wages then you will need to use form 1116 to get foreign tax credits. This is an either or choice.
