Hello....planning a move
« on: January 11, 2005, 02:56:53 AM »
Hello everyone.  I found this forum last week as I am doing research for my move this summer.  I am originally from Wisconsin but now in the D.C. area after some time with the Marine Corps.  I married a Welsh girl a few years ago and now that I am out of the Marine Corps, I am living up to my end of the deal and going back to the UK with her.  Her whole family is still in Wales and we are still deciding on where to move.  One option is the London area where she can stay with her company and another option is near Bristol or Cardiff closer to her family.  Either way, I work in IT security for the US government now and I will be looking for a similar job there, probably in the private sector unless I get lucky and can find a US government job.  Any and all advice is welcome.  Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

Are you checking Monster?  http://www.monster.co.uk/   Three pages of "IT security" jobs there at the moment.

Good luck on your move.

Jim

Best of luck with your move over here!  If you both end up in the London area, let us know...there are a few people who will be moving here in the summer so we'll probably have a UKY gathering then!

Hi there, welcome!  My advice (even though you didn't ask for it): live in London if you want excitement, a crazy pace of life and  high blood pressure. If you want a more peaceful life, go to Wales.  Best of luck with your intended move, wherever you may end up.

Hi and welcome!  I second Britwife's advice.  Before moving take a look at the job market, but also what kindof place you want to live.  So much of how people adjust is based on that.

Thanks for the replies and welcome.

Onetiger, I saw your previous posts about Old Town Alexandria and that is where I am living now....2 blocks from King Street.  Can you recommend some areas in the greater London area that are comparable?

Nothing entirely like Old Town but I would look at Hampstead, Primrose Hill or Belsize Park in the North/Northwest...Notting Hill or Kensington area to the West.  I'm sure there are a few places that are lovely just outside the first two zones of London but I don't really know them...some of it depends on how much money you'll have for rent and also where you need to commute to...If you want to figure out your commuting times, you can go to the Transport for London site and go to the travel planner...plug in the towns and then where you need to go...you'll get an idea of the time and train/bus systems around there.

UWBadger,
Welcome to UKY.  I'm originally from the DC area, and I'm living in Oxford now.  My wife and I dated a lot down in Alexandria.  We spent a lot of time at the Ben & Jerrys by the Torpedo Factory.  Anyway, what I wanted to say was that most of england is similar to Alexandria - and you're more likely to find the smaller towns to be similar to alexandria that anywhere in London propper.  Think of London as being more like DC or New York.  You'll get a "Georgetown", but not quite Alexandria.  Smaller towns all have pubs that were serving beer long before our founding fathers were in diapers.  And all the pubs are kind of like "The Fishmarket" in Alexandria.  You'll have 2 or 3 in each town.

DC has the technology corridor out Rt. 66 and north on 95 towards baltimore.  I've heard that here it's the M1, M4 & M25 technology corridors.  You might find some luck in finding a small town along those roads, and a job along those parts too.  I know the train goes by microsoft, HP and a bunch of other tech companies (I think around Slough) when I take it into London.

Anyway, good luck.  Let us know when you get over here!
Stephan

Dr. Steve beat me to the punch.  For atmosphere and amenities like Old Town Alexandria, try a small city.  One of our favorites is York.

Of course, outdoor dining is restricted by the weather in the UK.
