Depositing stimulus checks to USA accounts?
« on: May 16, 2020, 11:19:39 AM »
I hope everyone has been keeping safe and well during these trying times.   Sending lots of (socially distant) love and hugs!

I finally received my stimulus check (yay!), but would ideally like to deposit it in my USA account (Bank of America).  Does anyone know if this is possible at all from the UK?  If not, is it possible (and legal?) to mail the check and my account details to my father and have him deposit it on my behalf within the USA?

If there's absolutely no feasible way of doing this, I'll deposit it in my UK account but really would have liked it to be in my USA account if at all able.

Thanks in advance!

Does BoA have an online deposit capability? My US bank (USAA) let me deposit mine by taking a pic of it with their mobile app. If not, you can just mail it directly to BoA in the USA, or if you like you can mail it to your father and have him deposit it. There's nothing illegal about depositing a check in the bank for someone else.

Try switching your phone to the US Appstore and see if you can download their app. A lot have remote check deposit capabilities and don't care about country. Otherwise mailing to the US (via courier like FedEx or UPS) is the safest bet. They may even have an address for you to send to for check cashing.

It is certainly quite legal and possible to mail your check to your father and have him deposit it in your account.

I have a BoA account. They do have the ability to do online check deposits, at least with the BoA app I used back when I lived in the USA. I used to have to take a pic of the front and (signed) back of the checks. And it was deposited with 24 hours. You might need to find a way to get the US app to download onto a UK phone, or see if the online bank allows you to do the upload.

We used the mobile deposit for our bank in the US to deposit the check with no issues. you can log into the app store for the US and download the banks app if you don't already have it.

BofA also has a "bank by mail" address. I made the mistake of sending a tax refund check via postal mail to it (instead of FedEx) and it was tracked by Royal Mail to New York, where it disappeared, never to be seen again. As it had my bank account info in the accompanying letter, plus my signature, I had to do the whole "anti-fraud" thing. Not so good.  :(

While the online aps are not necessarily secure, you might want to take your chances with using one to get the one check deposited. Alternately, you could FedEx to the Bank of America's "Bank by Mail"  at https://www.bankofamerica.com/accessiblebanking/homeoffice.go

Send via Standard Mail
PO Box 105576
Atlanta, GA 30348-5576

Send via Overnight or FedEx
GA4-004-01-52
6000 Feldwood Road
College Park, GA 30349-3652

Congrats on getting the check. Good luck on your test.

I have sent tax returns by tracked mail and once it gets to New York you can then track it using the USPS. It usually takes less than 2 days to get to NYC then many weeks to get to its final destination. It bounces around a myriad of sorting offices, spending a long time in each one before eventually arriving. Check the last notice on Royal Mail’s handover to the USPS and you should find a USPS tracking reference. I do agree that Fedex is much better.

I have paid US checks into US banks (BofI and HSBC NA) using online and/or phone apps for many years, long before we moved to England. and after we arrived here. Always found them to be secure and easy to use.

Yes, I sent my tax check by registered mail. It tracked to JFK in New York. That was the end of it. The USPS said they never got it at JFK. Royal Mail said they gave it to USPS. Each said the other was responsible. Neither would pay any sort of compensation for the fees I'd paid to have it sent. It was a royal pain in the patootie to get the check re-issued. And that was a "normal" tax check. I'd hate to have to wade into the stimulus check pool on this.

There is, of course, the benefit/cost analysis route. If you deposit it to an account here, how much do you lose in fees and conversion to the pound? If it's not more than the FedEx charge, you might go that route. Unless it really needs to be in your USA account.

If you are going to send the actual check, use FedEx.  8)

Thanks everyone.  I ended up being too scared the check would vanish into the international mail void (wouldn't be the first time in my experience), and ended up just depositing it here.  With all the courier transit disruption due to the pandemic on top of everything, I didn't want to take the chance of losing it.

Hi, could I ask which UK bank you used to deposit the USD cheque please?

I deposited our cheques (sic Checks!) into HSBC - reasonable rate and a £12 bank charge. Looking forward to a new waive of stimulus payments  ;D
