Any Travel Insurers for USA?

Hi all,

Booking soon for USA to visit family in PA in November.

I can't get travel insurance anywhere it seems for a country that the FCO advises against travelling to. I guess it's understandable but some people require essential travel.

Are there any companies that insure?

I don't think you are going to find any in those circumstances. Travel advice may change by then but I wouldn't risk travelling anywhere, let alone the US without it.

I was checking for travel ins the other day. There are a couple of companies that will give you a policy (I think it was going to be about £75 for the Daughter), but not cover anything covid-related. So the usual stuff - missed flights, lost luggage, broken legs, they were going to cover in the US of A. But not Covid. 

I will try to remember which companies those were - there were at least two, maybe three I looked at just last week. If I can manage to remember which ones, I'll post it here.

BA have rules where you can cancel your flight anytime and be given a voucher for the full amount to be used by April 2022.

I think we buy and then if situations worsens and it's extremely unsafe to fly and not have insurance available we cancel and rebook at another date

How about health insurance while you are there? 

Iceland Air has a completely refundable option. We have flown with them several times and they've been fine. They fly to Boston and JFK, I think. You might have to drive the rest of the way if you use them, as I think those are the closest to your destination. But I may have looked at one-way to EWR (I think it was Newark. Could have been JFK. That was a lot of searches ago!) and it was about $850. And refundable. Not sure what the round-trips were going for. I have noticed that all the fares seem to jump way up after 1 September.

We are flying Delta, which has a waiver of all no-change fees and if we have to cancel we have up to a year to rebook. (And pay the higher, undoubtedly, fees.) Fingers are crossed we get out before the next wave and "home". Where we will hunker down and try to avoid the plague.

Oh. On the travel insurance. Here's a list to explore. Apparently some companies are selling "except Covid" policies still. (Caveat  - I have not explored this thoroughly. I have private insurance in the USA, and the Daughter would qualify for medicaid, as we will be residents.)

I have told myself that we won't likely be back in the USA before 2022.  I just don't see how this is going to turn around AT ALL in 2020.  Vaccines will hopefully start to be rolled out in 2021, but we could be into a mutation, etc.

Not sure how that would work for a visitor who wasn't a resident, though.

We're more optimistic about there being tourism travelling before end of 2022.

However, some people do need to go to America for an essential reason. For instance, my best friend's Dad died recently who lived in Colorado. He needed to go over to take care of obvious things and his mother etc. It seems even essential visits you're riding your luck due to no insurance. The death was non-covid related.

Flights at the moment to EWR are only £1,000 for the two of us and the little one. I think that's a great price. Also, PA is very strict with covid related things so we have some confidence in spending time there. Plus, we're just spending time with family. Not travelling to the big cities etc.
