Hello Everyone!
« on: February 11, 2021, 05:17:22 PM »
Hi All! My name is Maria. I am very excited to have found this forum and I look forward to making many new friends here.

I am a single mom of 2 teenagers. I have been a middle school orchestra teacher (ages 11-14) for 25 years. I have dual citizenship in the US and Malta, although I was born and have lived in Long Island, New York all my life.

When I retire, in 6 years, I would very much like to move to England, specifically London (to start). Prior to retirement, and if my school district will permit it,  I have considered teaching abroad in London as a way to get familiar with the UK (not very sure about how to do this yet).

My children and I are  hoping to come for a holiday in the summer of 2022 (fingers crossed) to have a chance to explore and learn more about the way of life, the universities, and the possible job opportunities in and around London.

My 2 children, who are nearly 16, & 14,  are seriously considering attending University in the UK or, at the very least, a Study Abroad Program. They have expressed an interest in living in England in or near London as well. And I am currently working on their dual citizenship for Malta.

Although it will be 6 years before I can make the great leap across the pond, I am really hoping to get a lot of great advice and make a few friends along the way. I freely admit that I have absolutely no idea where to begin and feel completely lost on what my first steps should be. However, I would like to do what I can to prepare in advance, since I know this process will most likely  be a long and complex  journey. I am not the type to leave things until the last minute. Slow and steady wins the race is more my speed.

Thank you in advance! I look forward to getting to know all of you! ~Maria

Hi Maria. Welcome to the forum!

As the UK is no longer in the EU, I’m not sure that being Maltese helps you move here. I’d be closely looking at any potential visa categories that you (and your children) would qualify for.

Being students under Tier 4 visas would not lead to settlement.

We don’t know how difficult it would be to get work visas in 6 years’ time (currently you have to be sponsored by a specific UK employer).

There is no retirement visa to the UK (at the moment).

Children over the age of 18 when you first apply need to find their own visa path.

Sounds like your best bet is to find a school to sponsor you in the UK to work as a teacher before your eldest turns 18.

Hi Maria, welcome to the forum.  :)

Unfortunately, due to Brexit and the end of free movement, you will all need the appropriate visas in order to live in the UK.
This will be more of a problem for you than for your children as student visas are relatively easy to obtain. As it stands, although there was one many years ago, there is currently no visa for retired people wishing to move to the UK.

Thank you larrabee & physicskate for pointing me in the correct direction. I will definitely take a closer look at my visa options.
Happy Weekend!

Won't your citizenship allow you to move to Ireland?  I't just as nice as England but without the Brexit morons running the place.
