New passport and change of address
« on: December 07, 2020, 10:08:31 AM »
My husband is currently renewing his US passport at the embassy in London. We also moved to a new address a few months after arriving in the UK, so we think now would be a good time to alert the Home Office to these new details.

My husband is currently here on his spouse visa. We're due to extend later in 2021.

Am I correct in thinking I need to fill out this form? https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/768465/coc-_migrant_-12-18.pdf

Which section would the new passport number go into?

The change of address should really have been reported as soon as you moved, but if you do it now, that should be fine.

I'm not sure if you should use the paper form or not, as  someone tried to do a change of address using the paper form recently and was told to do it online instead.

The online change of address form is here:
https://visa-address-update.service.gov.uk/?_ga=2.219429401.1093891283.1607291170-1024994036.1592941448

I would have a go doing it using the online form, and see if it allows you to put both the new address and new passport details in it. If so, then just fill it out and submit it.

It may be that you can enter the new passport details on the online form as well.

If you end up having to use the paper form, I would put both the new passport details and the new address in the box that says:
Personal details
11. Description of change

So it seems the online form only allows you to update the address.

Should I just go ahead and do that, and then when the new passport arrives, use that to update his passport details separately? Or should I really be doing both at the same time?

It’s up to you, but I think I’d probably just do the new address on the online form now (because there have been issues with updating the address using the paper form), and then do the passport form when you get the new passport back.

Just a quick follow up. We did update my husband's details online, got an auto response once he had done that. But since then nothing. Has anybody else updated their address online? If so, do they usually respond confirming or does the lack of response indicate that everything is ok?

He has his passport in hand now, so ready to update the passport details. Don't want to do that though until we're sure they have our most up-to-date address on file.

That's normal - they don't send anything else other than an acknowledgement that you've submitted it.

You can go ahead and update the passport details now :).
