Two factor authentication via Text/SMS?
« on: January 20, 2021, 03:41:09 PM »
How are people handling two factor authentication on their US accounts? Most only support text/SMS rather than an authenticator app, and I'm not sure if they allow international text numbers.

I have a US bank account, a brokerage account and also Social Security that require 2FA.

3 other US accounts including private pensions that I access online don't require 2FA, which is fine by me as they are essentially read-only sites. IRS electronic funds transfer for paying estimated taxes also doesn't use 2FA.

The bank and brokerage support voice as well as text, in that they will call the US number on record and a robotic voice speaks the numbers. (I have a Skype account with US number for this purpose, among others).  With SS you have a choice of text or email confirmation so I choose email to get the verification code.

A U.S. Voip number would be best.

I thought some sites were blocking VOIP for 2FA, but if it's working for people. that's all that counts.

I think the answer is to create a new Google account that is only used for financial password resets and 2FA, then protect that account with Google Authenticator.

I have this but many US financial sites insist on SMS/phone for 2FA, and using email to get a verification code is not an option.

The strict definition of 2FA is something you know (username and password) and something you own, so while Google can be used with 2FA (something you own is an authenticator app on a smartphone), it can be used without 2FA so a bank could not assume you are using Google with 2FA enabled.
