health/travel insurance

Dear all, we are planned to fly to San Francisco in a few weeks, as we do most summers. Typically, we would buy a travel insurance for UK residents to cover for potential health emergencies while in the US. However, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the USA, thus making all standard travel insurances invalid. I came a cross a few very expensive options that will openly cover us up if we still decide to go, but we are talking about £600 per person, and a family of five... Any alternative, assuming the US is kept amber?

Not that I know of, sorry. Even the expensive policy will be considerably cheaper than being hospitalized, though. [My daughter was in the ER and then spent the night for observation about 10 years ago, and the bill came to over $14,000.]

On the good side, California's Covid rate appears to be under control relatively well, for now. The State is "open" for business, with very minor restrictions varying by jurisdiction. If you haven't seen this https://www.flysfo.com/travel-well  it may be helpful to you on your travels.

Warning - rental cars are in obscenely short supply. (The companies sold off a lot of their cars during the pandemic, rather than have them idle.) It might not hurt to have reservations with two different companies, if you can do so without a penalty, in case you get to the airport and find that even though you've rented a car there is not one there for you. May not be a problem at SFO, but it's worth checking in advance to avoid a nasty surprise.  Also, the prices are through the roof for the same reason.
