My family has used the same accounting firm in the US since the 1940s. My grandparents used them, my dad has used them literally his whole life, and I think I’ve used them too??
My dad always sorted (read paid for them to be filed) them on my behalf. I just sent my P60 annually. I had zero other involvement. It was great. But also very childish... (also bear in mind I moved to the UK when I was a very childish 20 year old).
I decided once my daughter was born in 2019 that it’s about time I grew up and ‘sorted’ things myself. I now have kids who will need to file at some point and I wanted to start taking a bit of responsibility with that...
I knew I was late with 2019, but I had a baby, and covid, and denial are all powerful things. So I bit the bullet in October of last year (2020) and contacted this accountant to help me file for 2019 and 2020 (2020 is a complex year for me as I have some capital gains, never received any stimulus (which now makes me think I’ve never ever filed???!).
So I sent them all my income info for 2019 and 2020 (sent the 2020 info on 31st of Dec 2020!!).
There hasn’t been much back and forth. Today I emailed asking what is the status, how do I pay, what do I owe etc... and they have replied saying they need literally the info I have sent them 6 or 8 mo this ago.
So now I’m doubting I’ve EVER filed taxes and have no clue what the hell I need to or can do!!! I fear the IRS. They aren’t known for being friendly folk (unlike HMRC).
Any advice on what to do or how to ensure I get/ remain reasonably compliant? I’ve seen the 2019 return, but I just don’t think it was filed! No idea on 2020!!!! Ffs!
Literally I was chasing this up cause I wanted to get the ball rolling for my UK self assessment tax return!!! Ahhh.
