Thanks everyone.

@KFdancer Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately I don't have a ticket yet to go home as I am waiting for the approval for my spouse visa application.  I am assuming I can't travel until I receive it.  I was hoping to travel when my 8 year old daughter is off school, but doesn't look like it will happen now.

Do you think once the UK lifts all restrictions from Covid they will open more appointments ?  I just don't want to get an emergency appointment if I can help it.  I don't want to wait for an emergency to happen to apply for it either  :(

Genuinely NO idea!  Put it this way, my kids passports expire summer 2022 and I’m concerned about getting an appointment before then.  A year and a half of limited embassy services, plus kids having to renew every 5 years, definitely means normal is a bit off.

I DO know they post CRBA appointments on Thursdays. Only for the following week though….

My two daughters US passports expired at the  start of the first lockdown - have been obsessively checking for an appointment for over a YEAR now and not managed to get anything. Since they changed the US requirements it seems they would be able to fly into the US from the UK on their expired passport but not back to the UK. Has anyone done this? Also, is it possible to fly in to the US on the expired US passport and then renew when over there? Can you just renew at a passport office or post office?
Thanks so much!

Running into this myself now as my youngest's passport just expired and had plans to travel in December to the US. What a pain! I wonder why they can't renew children's passports the same as adult ones, it makes no sense to me.

Well what will probably happen is the airline will refuse to let you board without a valid passport. I believe in theory you can still enter the US with a birth certificate/proof of citizenship, but you'll have to convince the airline to let you board and then you'll also have some issues when entering the country I'm sure. I'm also curious if anyone has tried this, since I may go that route if push comes to shove.
