National Insurance Number

Hi all my husband applied for a NI number in May, still nothing come in! We’ve tried phoning almost daily and it cuts off everytime, we never get through to an actual person. Anyone else experienced this? It’s so frustrating and we just don’t know what to do, except wait I guess but it’s been 7 months!

When you say it cuts off. Do you mean the line is faulty or it just takes you through options which don't lead to a person?

If the latter, have you tried other options which don't necessarily sound like the right one? Have you tried doing nothing? That works with the income tax line!

It does beep beep for a little bit like maybe 20 secs then disconnects:( it’s 0800 141 2079 we’ve tried since May, it is so strange. Twitter keep telling us to use that one and to keep trying, just can never get through. It sounds like it’s a line problem every time we phone, I think maybe too many people are trying possibly. It’s so frustrating!

Yes, that's the right number.  Have you tried right at 8am when the line opens? Preferably not on a Monday.

At the bottom of the page is a button that says "is there a problem with this page" I don't know how much good it would do but you could report the problem there.

I see the service standard is 16 weeks so it's not outwith the realms of possibility that you're still just in the Covid backlog. But I'd be wanting to speak to someone too by this time!

Escalating matters should get a result.  Try writing a letter of complaint to the Minister responsible for the Department of Work and Pensions, Therese Coffey.

That's a toll free number, not sure if they work from overseas.
