So we’ve had a couple of ‘wins’ lately in the ‘sort out the pensions’ ongoing saga. Firstly, my DH had his phone interview for claiming his retirement benefit with the FBU on Oct 20 and on Nov 7 a payment showed up in his bank account! I’m guessing this was particularly speedy since he was already getting a spousal benefit and just switching over to claim his own benefit, but still.
Secondly, last summer DaveB wrote:
BTW, if anyone reading this thread is in the same position as me (looking at filling in missing years), be aware the HRMC web page that shows you the gaps you can fill in (
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-your-state-pension/account/nirecord/gaps) only shows the price of making voluntary Class 3 contributions (~£800 / year). If you been working abroad, you are likely eligible to pay Class 2 (even if not self-employed) instead. Class 2 is much cheaper (~£160 to fill in a year) and entitles you to more benefits.
On reading this I realized I had probably paid the wrong class, for 10 years of voluntary catch up contributions☹️ Anyway, 4 phone calls, 4 letters and a year later I’m getting a refund! I don’t know how much but it should be sizable I think. So thanks DaveB, I’d never have known without your post, and if you’d like to message me privately with a charity of your choice I’ll make a donation. Happy days!
