TaxAct
« on: February 04, 2023, 05:57:53 PM »
I’ve used TaxAct for many years and find the platform intuitive and easy to navigate. In recent years there have been increasing hoops to Jump through with regards payment cards and U.K. addresses. There was a spectacular workaround that worked brilliantly where you’d use the first line of your address and the rest would be TaxActs. This worked without fault, until this season. I was getting a constant decline  under this method, even trying a VPN to no avail. I had Major issues with MFA, as the old and much loved email authentication method was removed, leaving the Google App or a text to mobile. I was able to overcome this, (again via a brilliant suggestion on this forum (can’t find the original post), with disposable mobile numbers. Anyhow as my account had been locked out by TaxAct I had to put in my previous U.S address and other information to get the account reenabled. As a final attempt I used that Stateside address in the payment section and it all worked, payment accepted! How my U.S. bank card worked with the old address is a mystery. Any other online purchases and it’s my U.K.address with that card… strange indeed.

I used OLT this year….easy and no hassle. Fed e-filed and accepted, state has to be mailed but that’s the state regs. Total cost was $16

I still have a US credit card and bank card. Using TurboTax previously it wasn’t better and far more expensive….and wouldn’t let me e-file anything with an NRA spouse. OLT had no issues at all.

Does your US credit card have a US address associated with it? I have a US credit card but it has my UK address and I can’t use it for some things including TurboTax.

I am definitely open to alternatives.

My credit card does have a US address. I changed it to my brother’s so I could use TurboTax. They really don’t make it easy…..they all do expat taxes but oh wait….they don’t accept a foreign address!

I retain an Amex card with a US forwarding address that my daughter has. She moved to England last year, before that I used her address.

Just in case anyone is looking for disposable numbers to receive authentication texts (without having your own US number) here is the link:

I found the same issue with TaxAct  >:( . I used the (seems very dodgy, but....) disposable number to get the SMS then once in I asked it to verify using the Google Authenticator app and changed the number to one of my parents' telephone numbers. Now to see if it will let me pay.......

You could use your parents number from the get-go. Once verified, over to the Authenticator App. The fun really starts with payment, from refund, payment card, or PayPal. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I was trying not to bother them too much, and didn't realise the authenticator app would be an option once I was in (why does it not tell you this?). I was delighted to see PayPal as an option since this solved all my previous other problems with no US credit card. Seems to have done the trick and I've finished it all.

Have you explored H&R block expat?
