Can references for naturalisation be a married couple?

I'm preparing for the last phase of my immigration journey and wanted to approach prospective referees for my naturalisation application.

I have friends who are a married couple living in the UK - she's a British lecturer and he's an Irish citizen working as a town planner. 

Would this be acceptable? Or should I pick my favourite out of the two () and approach a different friend to be a second reference?

The referee must not:

• be related to the applicant or the other referee
