Kudos to Greenback taxes
« on: March 16, 2023, 01:16:15 PM »
I know we are always looking for recommendations!  I moved my tax prep this year from a dual qualified advisor (£1600)  to online with Greenback.  I paid $700 and it was fast and as many pages as previous years.  (145 pages).  The tiny refund was what I was expecting.  Pleased

Great feedback, thanks for that. I am considering switching to Greenback in a year or 2 as our taxes become a lot less complex.

Do they e-file the return?

Glad you saw this, as I had seen you had them on your backup list.
Yes, e filed  and slick

I’m doing my daughter’s taxes myself.   As she should be easy, but this year I need to revoke her FEIE and I am using myexpat taxes, 149 euros to file.  Not convinced as I can only do some bits once I pay.   I tried OLT but get a much higher number to owe and it’s a bit clunky.  Not sure on this experience.

I am on their mailing list and have attended at least 2 of their free webcasts.

I help my son do his US taxes each year. He has no US income so his UK taxes are covered by PAYE.

I am just slightly cautious about a firm headquartered in Hong Kong https://opencorporates.com/companies/hk/1684748.

Do you have any concrete evidence of their incompetence or other misconduct?

It may help to clarify that my concern is largely from a data protection perspective.

That link doesn’t work for me.

These links show them headquartered in Michigan. I am not convinced that they are a Hong Kong based company,  and have fooled the Better Business Bureau and others into thinking they are based in the USA.

This news story says it is/ was based in Hong Kong: https://remoteworkhub.com/remote-accounting-team-spans-globe-greenback-expat-tax/ . I concur that the holding company may well have moved locations since the story was published.

That story was published in 2017, and the BBB, as well as  their own website, now has them located in the USA.  Thanks for citing your source.

I used Greenback a good few years ago to redo 3 years of returns after not having filed Fbars. I didn't do Streamlined because no tax was due.  At the time I believe Greenback just farmed their clients out to accountants. The tax returns indicated their address was in Hong Kong, and this was something the tax attorney I subsequently hired was not happy about. If this is still the case, I suspect your satisfaction will be based on which accountant you get.

In my case I was about to submit streamlined as US resident and pay the 5% penalty (or whatever it is) - per Greenback's advice - but attorney told me as no tax was due (I had declared all income and paid tax on it) that using the delinquent FBar procedure was better as there was no fee.
