Paying for checked bags
« on: April 03, 2023, 06:45:36 PM »
Hi guys... I'm flying to Texas on Thursday to visit my family (first time in 4 years!).  When i booked the flights, i was shocked to find that none of the fares included a checked bag, and that it has to be paid for separately.

So how does this work?  Do i pay when i check in?  I looked at the airlines websites and there doesn't seem to be an option to pre-pay for the checked bag (United and American)

Also... I am flying BA from Glasgow to Heathrow, then from Heathrow to Dallas on American.  So if i pay for the bag when i check in with BA, do i have to pay again when I check in with AA at Heathrow?

You are all much more seasoned travellers than I am, so hope you can advise me!  Thanks...

Paying for the checked bag should work all the way through. It always has for me.

Normally if you bought both flights on one ticket, you get checked through. If you purchased them separately, usually not. Or, that's how my experience has been.   It's hotter than....  you know where.... in Texas lately, so pack some lightweight.  ;D

I usually fly BA/AA. When I book my tickets I've always been able to select the fare that includes at least one checked bag. I want to say it is Economy Plus. You will now pay when you check in at the airport. You will need to pay both ways but not for each individual segment. I'd ask if there is anyway to upgrade your ticket to include your checked bag both ways.

Thrilled to be back home with my dogs.
The trip was stressful...  to do with aging parents, mainly.
I never had to pay anything for the checked bag on the way over, but i got smacked with it for $75 on the way back, which i was able to pay at the checkin desk.

Thanks for the replies. :)
