Hey!  Glad you got the passports sorted out!

Bring WARM clothes!  It's freaking freezing over here right now!  Yes, bring your camera.  Bring good walking shoes.

You might also want to measure some of your things that you really want to bring over (if there are any) to get an idea if they'll fit in the apartments/houses you view.  American furniture is generally bigger than British, so you'll know ahead of time if your sofa won't fit through a UK door!   :)

Most importantly, bring an open mind!

Enjoy your trip and let us know what you thought of Birmingham!   ;D

Actually it is not that cold here (London).  It is in the mid 40s during the day currently.  I'm sure it is similar in Birmingham.  Temperatures in the Northeast US today, now that is COLD!!!!!

Definitely bring the umbrella as it can rain any time.  A regular coat and scarf should be more than enough.

Hope you enjoy your trip to England!!

Take lots of gum for the flight - its LOOONG :) Good companies to fly with are BA and Virgin (personal TV's!) but beware of connecting through JFK on Virgin - they're ALWAYS late.

I wouldnt reccomend shipping a car to England. Sending 250 cuft of household items back from the UK cost us £2000. A car is going to be far far more expensive to ship than that and you'll only have to ship it back to the US again! I dont know if the dealerships would service your car over there if its from the USA. They might but it would probably be at your cost (not under warranty). On top of that - youre going to Birmingham. In the two years youre likely to be there you'll have to use the new M6 Toll once and a while. Your driver's side will be on the wrong side of the car to pay the toll if youre in an American car! And dont forget roundabouts! Besides, it wont take you long to feel comfortable driving on the different side of the road/car.

So my beloved coffee maker is a no? crock pot? how about my gas grill?  Can you get propane over there? This sucks!  We got so much great new stuff for our wedding and now I need to give it up!

Leave your things with your mom or in storage! Leave ALL the electrical appliances except for your computer and portable music devices in the USA. Coffee pots and crock pots are no problem to find at places like Curry's (Junction 9 on M6 - remember that, you'll be there alot!). Say £30 - 40 each? You might be able to bring your grill though - check out online retailers in the UK to see what the propane tanks look like, see if they match.

And as far as beds go Im with Azroomie on this one. The rooms in the UK are very very small. Many 3 bed houses have two rooms that only just fit a UK Queen (like a Full in the US) and the third room just barely fits a Twin comfortably. My 3rd bedrom (large by UK standards for a third bedroom) was 7' x 11'.

If you want to buy up on ONE thing before you come to the UK - let it be TOWELS!! Towels are SO SO SO expensive in the UK. I lived there for 3 years and every time I had to grit my teeth when I needed new towels. I couldnt bare to spend that much money - ON A TOWEL! Im talking £10 each. Thats like... $17... EACH! The best place I found to get towels and things like that was a store called Dunelm.

I mentioned Junction 9 on the M6 - the M6 is the main motorway that goes by Birmingham. Junction 9 is at a place called Wednesbury which is near Birmingham - it has an Ikea (the only one for MILES AND MILES AND MILES), A B&Q (owned by Home Depot in the USA), A Curry's (appliances etc), a PC World (computers), and several carpet & furniture stores.

A couple exits down the M6 further you'll find signs for "Warner Village" which is a GREAT Movie & Entertainment Complex. Martin and I highly reccomend "That Mexican Place" for really what we thought was the best Mexican food in town. Unfortunatly it doesnt get much more "authentic" than that. Its good food anyway. About £40 for both of us on a night out for dinner. Old Orleans is also very good. When you go and see a move there splurge and go for the Gold Cinema tickets - theyre far far nicer :) But the regular cinema tickets are good too. Gold just gives you a private theatre with about 40 people and nice big seats! They also serve alchohol in the gold cinemas.

And remember - its BUR-MING-UM ... not BIR-MING-HAM. Best way to endear yourself to the locals is to know how to say their city's name properly :) Its also fondly referred to as Brum.

Only listen to BBC Radio - all the others are horrible. Who could ask for better than commercial free radio?

Shop at Sing Fat for great chineese groceries if youre into that sort of thing. Its just outside China Town in Brum (across from the Market Hall).

When you get the chance to explore - go to Lichfield! Its a nearby town. It sports the UK's only 3 spired cathedral :) I used to work there for the council.

And one last thing...

Tell your husband's boss' wife that I was brought up in Buffalo (well Yorkshire, NY - but its only 40 minutes away) :) I lived in Cannock (in Staffordshire) for 3 years. She'll probably know where it is.  Its funny how people from little towns like Buffalo can end up in the same place half way across the planet.

Oh and if youre in the mood to stalk Tiffany (yes, "I think we're alone now") - She's a regular at the Sports Bar in Cannock. She just married a local boy and she lives in a terraced propety just down the street from where I used to live. Go figure, eh?

Anyway, enjoy your time in England!! Tell us if you like it when you get back :)

  >:(  :( Well.. things aren't going well on the passport front... WHY is this so difficult!?  :P :\\\'(

We paid our $700 and have been tracking our pasport FedEx to NY and we thought everything was going well.  I mean, we already have our $1800 plane tickets for Saturday!  Well, we called to get a return tracking number this morning and they said they had a problem.  a BIG problem.  They are unable to read Jason birthdate on his birth cert. due to it being folded over & over and just being plain 'ol old!  So the State Dept. in NY has ALL of our info - but won't issue him a passport.  So he needs to get a new birth certificate PRONTO.  He had to cancel all of his meetings todays and is driving up to Richmond, where he was born, to get a new birth cert.  Then he has to overnight it to NY and hopefully we can get our passports by Friday night or Sat morning.  Nothing like cutting it close!  :o  This is the craziest and most stressful thing we have ever done!

Please keep your fingers crossed for us!

Gretta

:D :D HAHAHAHAHAHAH!! That new profile pic you have Sarah is great!  :D
Sure does make me smile on a crummy day like today!

So Jason got the new birth cert and overnighted it to NY for processing.  Still doubt that we will get the passports by Saturday morning but we will see.  If not, I guess it's not that big of deal - I am just excited, ya know!  I don;t want to wait ONE SINGLE MINUTE MORE!   ::)  Good things come to those who wait, I know!

Well, hope everyone is having better weather wherever they are compared to our weather here.  It so so unbelievable how unprepared NC is for snow.  It took Jason 7 hours and took me 4 hours to get home from work yesterday. FOR 1 INCH OF SNOW!  :o  It was so ridiculous.  And tonight we are supposed to get 2inches - Jeez.

Take care!

Oooohh - question first!
What type of clothing should i take for this first trip?  At work here I live in suits and at home in jeans.  I don;t have much in between!  Jaosn new boss is taking us to dinner and some pubs - can I just wear jeans and a sweater?  Do Brits wear alot of jeans?  I LOVE jeans! (a nice sweater and boots of course!)

Thanks guys!  :-*

When we go out, I usually wear jeans (unless it's a really swanky place, of course!).  Think nice jeans, a black turtleneck, nice black boots, and some nice earrings.  You'll be ready to go anywhere!   :)

Fingers crossed Gretta! Good to hear that Jason got his Birth Certificate sorted out. Thats one less thing you have to worry about now.

I should show you some of the pictures I took in Jan 2003 in Staffordshire. It was a mild dusting of snow over a couple of days (barely an inch!) and yet it ground the M6 to a hault (as if it isnt perpetually at a hault anyway, but you know what I mean!). So far the weather here in Texas is 70 degrees, slightly overcast, with a light breeze. ALMOST just why I moved to texas. Bring me a little more sun and Im a happy bunny :)

As far as going out at night - splurge and get yourself something evening casual for dinner. For the pubs you'll get away with jeans during the day and during the evening on weeknights. As far as Friday to Sunday night goes, well that depends on the pub. Places like Yates' (a bub/wine bar chain) can be quite particular about weather theyre allowing jeans or not. It also varries between men and women. Some places allow women in jeans and not men. Men wearing sneakers are generally turned away at the door on Friday & Saturday nights in more popular establishments (ie, not the "old timey" pubs). I imagine you'll be fine in your jeans, sweater and boots (you'll be warmer anyway!) and if the pub youre about to go in wont allow jeans, believe me - its not hard to find another one. (Congleton,  a medium sized town in Cheshire where my husband grew up, has 40 pubs!! Probably more!). If youre in to a bit of the nightlife (dancing, music) you should check out Code in birmingham. I saw fatboy slim there a couple of years ago. Its a great experience but no jeans there Im afraid!

As for regular weather - jeans and sweaters all the way! Fleece is great too. Take shoes you dont mind getting mud and rain all over :)

Does that help?

Thanks again for all the tips ladies!  ;D

Looks like we won;t be heading to the UK until Tuesday  >:( :-\\\\ now....the holdup with Jaosn's birth certificate and all.  What a pain.  That's OK - I have heard worse horror story than ours!  So I am just going to take this weekend to buy new books for the plane, download more audio tapes onto my Ipod - and shop more!  ;) 4 more days!

Sorry to hear that it didnt all get sorted out in time. But it sounds like you can use your 4 days pretty wisely. Whats better than shopping!? *sarah has Ipod envy!*

Were your plane tickets were refundable / changeable?

 :) Hi Sarah!

Yes - Since Jason's company paid full fare - they can move it back to Tuesday with just a minimal charge.  Thank goodness!  We are both still disappointed - but what is a few more days in the scheme of things I guess.  I just don't want to have to go to work Monday now!  :P

My Ipod is great - I never thought of downloading audia tapes onto it until now - it works so great!  Yesterday our power was out due to an accident for about 7 hours - I just listened to Harry Potter on my Ipod while I cleaned!  I think it will be great for the plane - I am sure I will still bring some regular books - but it sure saves some room!

 :D Gretta

Oh!  When I spoke with Jason's new boss's wife on the phone, she told me about 2 'women's clubs' she was involved with in Birmingham - is anyone familiar with these?

Hi! just been reading the thread and when somebody is moving to the Uk, this where the UKY website really is invaulable, isn't it?-you can't beat good advice based on actual experience!. I think everybody should give themselves a pat on the back and start writing down their Xmas list for Santa this year.

Cheers Gerry

Hi Gretta!

Glad to hear that the plane tickets were changed with little hassle and most importantly, no cost to you :) Almost time to go! Can ya dig it? :D

I havent heard of either of those groups before but the North American Connection has some GREAT links on their site.

;D hee hee - love seeing the kitty in the melon helmet first thing in the morning!  that is just too funny!

While packing last night, charging my batteries for my digi camera and charging my Ipod for the plane ride - I got to thinking about 'converters.'  I guess I atleast need to get one for the Ipod and the digital camera??  I am a little confused about a converter vs. changing the voltage.  I need one that does both, right?  Anyone have any suggestions on where to get one?  I looked them up on www.amazon.com and pulled up SO many I got even more confused!
Did anyone bother bringing over their lamps with a converter?  We wern't going to bother - but I LOVE my lamps!  :-\\\\

I AM SO EXCITED!  2 MORE DAYS! Of course I have been packed for about 5 days already - but i keep remembering small things that would be helpful.  Got some energy bars for snacking, copies of all important documents - just in case, and need to make a list of important numbers before I leave.  We don;t even have our itinerary yet, but it appears we leave around noon (eastern standard) time and arrive in Brum late late Tuesday night.

Again - hope the weather is nicer there than here this week!  It is 13 degrees and icy with gale force winds this morning! Awful!

xoxox,
gretta
