Gretta,

Plug adapter - changes the plug of any appliance from US to UK. It just sticks on the end of the cord so that you can stick it in the wall. easy peasy. Best used when dealing with dual voltage appliances (like some hair dryers and computers etc).

power converter - changes the voltage from US to UK standards or vice versa. This is for things that dont convert the power internally like fridges, microwaves etc. The bigger the appliance the bigger converter you need. converters for small appliances like hair dryers are small and pretty inexpensive I think.

check apple's website to see if the IPod is dual voltage. If it is, you wont need to worry about a power converter. Just a plug adapter. If it isnt dual voltage you'll need a power converter to charge it up if you cant put batteries in it. I would IMAGINE, though this is just a guess, that the IPod will be dual voltage because of its nature - take it with you wherever you go, use it during travel etc.

your lamps - all you need to do with lamps is change the cord and lightbulb socket. Sometimes changing the light bulb socket isnt even necessary, depending on if you can get the right kind of bulbs where youre going. might want to take the kind of light bulbs you need for your lamps with you on your trip and take a stroll through Ikea to see if you can match them up. B&Q is right next to Ikea and they have a good selection of blubs too. So do the supermarkets. That'll proove if you need to change the bulb sockets on your lamps as well as the cord.

A lot of removals companies can either make the change for you, or point you in the direction of someone who can. Call Sterling International Relocations - they deal with a lot of company transfer moves and do all sorts of things for you including scouting for appartments, renting furniture for your appartment so its ready to move into when you arrive, right down to changing your lamps over for you and supplying you with power converters.

Hope that helps!
Sarah

I've always exchanged mine at my bank.  If you go with Bank of America, you can request your pounds online and go pick them up at the bank the next day!

Hello and hopefully you are now in England - welcome!

I'm a Brit, married to an American, with experience of life both in the UK and in the US and I grew up in Solihull - lived there 'til I was 16! As mentioned by one of the previous contributors, Solihull is the 'posh' bit of Birmingham (i.e. the toney part of town) - nice shops, big houses (for the UK!!), generally green and pleasant.

Birmingham gets a bad press here in the UK, but in my opinion, it's one of the country's most progressive and multi-cultural cities, with a lot going on - you won't be short of things to do and places to visit.  I think people will be genuinely surprised and pleased that an American has come to live in their city - Brummies are pretty friendly and down to earth folks - so make the most of being different!

B'ham is surrounded by some great classic English countryside - visit Warwickshire (south east of B'ham) and Worcestershire (south west) for lovely villages and small towns.

I really hope you enjoy your new life here and UKY is here to help!!!

 ;D
Hello Everyone!  Thanks for all the well wishes!  We are back, safe and SLEEPY in Raleigh this evening.  BIRMINGHAM WAS WONDERFUL!  We had a whirlwind trip - so didn't get to do many 'touristy' things.. but it was fabulous!
We flew all night Wednesday night and arrived in Birm airport at 8 am Thursday morning.. I didn;t sleep on the plane and all - way too wired on coffee and excitement  ;D  and we were greeting by Jason's new boss.  He was great - very personable - he's from NY but has been in Brum for 9 years.  He took us right to the hotel to get some sleep but I was WAY TOO excited for that!  We were staying at the Moat House Inn http://www.moathousehotels.com/  - right in Solihull across from the mall/shopping center.  So we headed across to the mall for some tea and scones of course!  :D It was very nerve wracking trying to count 'pence' for the first time - still not sure if I have the hang of it yet.  But, our hotel was wonderful - the people were wonderful - the shopping was really WONDERFUL!  ;)
That night Jason went to a dinner with his new boss and I went to dinner with his new boss's wife.  She actually took me to a dinner that an expat club was having! PERFECT!
 this one ---> http://www.misn.org/home.htm
Had a great time quizzin' all the great women there on tips for relocating to the UK.  Played Bunko, drank wine, had a great night.
The next day Jason spent all day at his new office and Traci again took me all around town - to lunch and then touring the area.
We spent one whole day checking out estate agents and setting up viewing appts. and mortgage appts.  That was pretty stressful considering the cost of buying is SO different than it is here!  :o :o  We were SO shocked!  But we did end up finding a great place.. putting on offer down yesterday morning and today they accepted!   :D
I wish I could post pictures on here.... but it's a new semi-detached house in Dicken's Heath, Solihull.  I think we really lucked out that everything happened so quickly!  And it looks like we will be officially moving to England in 5 weeks!

Thanks again for all your help - and I will need it now more than ever!  I still have so many questions!

Oh - some great things about this week.... had never heard of a 'cat flap' before.  i thought that was a riot!  Oh! and I LOVED the Smart car!  That thing was hilarious!  But thanks to you guys I didn't make too many mistakes this week... but I am sure I will!
