Can't add Wise.com account to Vanguard

Wise.com has changed their USD bank details, so I had to delete and readd it to Vanguard. But when I try to add the new details, I just get the error "We're unable to add your bank at this time".

Has anyone else seen this problem or have a suggested solution?

The changed Wise bank details worked fine for me, I had to go through the 3 micro deposits routine again, other than that no problems.

Maybe give it another try in a day or 2.

  • I have my middle name on Wise, but vanguard only asks for first name. If I put my middle name in vanguard it says names don't match (and starts asking for more information.)
  • My wise address is the UK, my vanguard address is the US

Any thoughts?

My wife and I each have a Wise account because our Vanguard accounts are in individual names.  We both have Wise and Vanguard showing our UK address as our street address and for Vanguard a US address as our correspondence address on our Roth accounts. This is because of a stupid IRS rule that says any distribution from an IRA, including a Roth IRA, for an overseas address requires a 30% mandatory tax withholding even though Roth distributions are tax free.

My wife does not have her middle name or initial on her Wise account but does have her middle name on her Vanguard accounts.

I really don’t know what else to suggest except contact Vanguard, via secure message is easiest annd gives them time to investigate, and see if they can say what the problem is. I contacted them this week on something else and they responded within a couple of days.

That's good to know, and as always, I appreciate your insight. I'll send them a message.

I've been reluctant to set my vanguard investment account to my UK address as I've heard of people having their accounts closed.

My situation mirrors the problem you are encountering.

I have a Vanguard account in the US with my UK address. I also have a Wise account, again with my UK address. My Vanguard account has a middle initial, my Wise account does not.

When I attempt to add the new bank details I receive a message saying it didn’t work and to try again later.

I spent 40 minutes on the ‘phone with Vanguard to try and resolve the situation but to no avail. I spent a couple of hours on chats with Vanguard representatives last night. Again with no resolution. I have contacted Wise regarding this and they state they are looking into it and suggest maybe Vanguard has a block in the routing number, but that doesn’t make sense as at least one person on the forum has changed bank details successfully.

My wife is in the same situation.

I would be interested in any advice.

This is all very strange, I think the idea that Vanguard is blocking the routing number may have some merit

I just opened my Wise account to see the routing number and then looked it up and it resolves to COMMUNITY FEDERAL SAVINGS BANK with a New York address.

That sounds promising, if it was a routing number problem it would surely reject the attempt immediately.

I have tried it with and without my middle initial. If I add a middle initial, as is on my Vanguard account, it states the names don’t match.

I was wondering if the issue is technical. I have tried it using a Firefox browser and Safari but still have the same issue.

If Vanguard had a block on the routing number it wouldn’t explain your ability to successfully updated your banking details.

It's possible durhamlad updated Vanguard before we tried, and the block is a recent thing. I first tried the update on 22nd of November. 

Could we go the other way and add Vanguard to wise.com?

I don’t think that is possible. There is no way of adding Vanguard account details in wise.com.

Could I suggest you email wise.com about your situation, as I have done, and that may spur them into investigating further?

I agree with both statements. The only way to electronically send or receive money into Vanguard is with a bank that is linked to your account within Vanguard. 

My daughter received a large check in USD a few weeks back that was too large to be mobile deposited into her US bank, however Vanguard does mobile check deposits using their app which is very easy to use and they accept checks up the value of $500,000.  Not a solution here, just an item of interest.

Wairds - I've sent vanguard a secure message, and I'll post here with what happens next. Our only other option would be to find another online USD bank to add to vanguard, then move the money from that account to/from wise.

Durhamlad - that's good to know. I jumped through a lot of hoops to get my NC state refund check deposited. I ended up sending a relative a photo of the check to print out, then using my US paypal account to deposit it. Direct to vanguard would have been so much easier.

Hmm, Durhamlad, I read your response re IRA distributions being taxed at 30% if there is an overseas address, but what if I have a US mailing address but the bank is WISE (opened today) and I'm in UK?
