Claiming US Social Security at age 62
« on: March 10, 2024, 06:45:53 PM »
Not sure this is the right spot for this question , feel free to move it to correct spot if not.. :)
I'm getting closer and closer to that magic 62 when I can claim my US social security early..

I honestly have NO idea on where to start to enquire about this.. I'm quite computer literate if that helps :). How do I initiate the process? How long does it take? How does it get deposited in UK account? Tax ramifications etc? ..

Website links welcome, as well as any advice from anyone who has recently gone through the process?

Many Thanks

My wife applied through the US Embassy in London and it worked great. I will be doing the same myself later this year.

You probably already know, but if you have a spouse with no SS recorded they will get about 35% of your benefit. At FRA, they would get 50%, also the dreaded WEP if this applies to your circumstances.

I'm one of those impacted by the 'dreaded WEP' - costs me & my wife over $600 per month!

Although long diccussed, there remain moves in Congress to repeal WEP - not there yet, but we can always hope!!. The following may be of interest:

If only!!

It has been in committee for over a year and 90% of bills in committee never make it into law.  I will be applying at the end of the year to start in 2025 and expect to be reduced by about $400/month.
