BRP Card - How Long After Entry?

Hi all, I have received my Spousal visa entry clearance and am planning my trip to the UK. Can anyone tell me how long after they arrived in the UK was the BRP ready to be picked up at the post office? 

We're going to be staying with my in-laws in Wales and the post office the approval letter referenced is in Swansea, which is a little bit of a trip (and they'll have to drive me). So, it's not somewhere I can pop into daily.

Do you receive any notification that it's ready to be picked up, or is it just show up and ask?
