Ill 7 month old
« on: January 17, 2005, 02:53:25 PM »
Not sure what to do. My son Chris is now 7 months old. Since 18 Dec he has been either having diaherra or throwing up. It will go away for a couple of days and all is fine he goes back on solids and then it startes all over again. I have taken him to two doctors, one a Ped and one a family practice doctor. Both "treated" him and he became fine. Yesterday it started all up again. I am not sure what else to do. What worries me is I want tests done, blood, to see if something is wrong. But the doc's won't as they do not want to poke him. I am tired of him being ill. The thing that makes this harder for the doctors is he doesn't look ill. He is crawling, standing, trying to talk, and has color in his face. So they do not think anything severe is wrong. But it's been a month and has not stopped.

On a side point, my nephew, born to my brother in law in the UK, had a rare condition with his bladder muscles. He was only one of 20 people to ever have this surgery done. Also, my SIL had two miscarriages of boys. We are worried there may be a "bad gene" in the male line. I have mentioned but no one will listen.

Any ideas?

Can you connect this to food or drink?  Could you try an extra bland diet for a week or so to see if this helps?  If you are convinced that something is wrong with him and your doctors won't listen, perhaps it would be worth taking him elsewhere.  Have you tried talking to your health visitor?

We have tried half strength formula, rice cereal in the formula and no solids. As for the health visitor I am in the states and as we have an HMO I can only go to docs on the plan without paying big bucks. BUt as I have seen the doctors about 10 times in the last month I am already out $150 with co-pays and no help.

I would just be persistent in calling up your doctor.  I am sure you already have been.  Have they given you a reason or theory about why he has been sick?  If all else fails, go to the emergency room and wait to get some tests done.  I am not a nurse or a doctor, so I can't give you any medical advice.  But if you feel strongly that something is not right with your son, then just keep trying to be heard.

It could even be something like a food allergy that your not aware of.. However if it keeps happening.. I would want to get to the bottom of it(no pun intended) as well and would push for at least some consults and/or second opinions.

Just my opinion. :-)

Keep going to as many doctors till some proper test are done.  I can feel for you and your son, sickness is never fun.  Best Wishes.

We had a similar problem with our son.  Once we moved him to more solid foods (crackers, cheese, etc.) he had terrible stomach problems.  Although he'd vomit and had diarrhea, he was active and playful.  Our doctor kept telling us he was probably just moving from one virus to another and not to worry since he wasn't acting sick (hard to convince them he's not feeling well when he's giggling and running around the exam room).  After almost six months of him being ill off and again, we finally took him to an allergist.  Turns out that he's allergic to dairy.  But because he never had any classic allergy symptoms, the pediatrician kept blowing it off as "just the flu".  Once we cut it out of his diet, it was amazing how fast he got better.  Just a thought....

As to dairy, he is on soy formula. We had him on this as milk based made him ill. We started on soy just after he came home from the hostipal. I amnot sure what he would be allergic to unless it could be oatmeal. He loves it and has it each day. Maybe I should try taking it out and see what happens.

That might not be a bad idea.  Perhaps rice cereal until you've isolated the problem.  On the days he has bad diarrhea and vomiting, it might be worth trying to get some Pedialyte down him to keep the wee man hydrated.

Yes they do, I just checked. I'll stop giving it to him and see what happens.

This seems to be quite an informative site about gluten intolerance:

Doesn't want to poke him??? well first off... you didn't say whether he is running a temperature or not... if his temp is normal then i can understand why the doctor feels no need of tests most likely it is a bug or something he ate...but if he's feverish then i would insist they run some blood tests even if it is just to put your mind at rest... and is your doctor a pediatrician or a GP???  if your seeing a GP i would suggest you find a pediatrician...  baby's can go bad really quickly and a ped will know better as little ones are all he sees... does your husband go with you to the doctors? some HMO doctors  (ok this is gonna sound racist but i'm not... it's just a sad fact ) especially ones ... how do i put this delicately... can't... is your doctor of middle eastern or latin? i have found... sadly... that some male doctors look on woman as hysterical and you won't get anywhere unless your husband is with you or you put your foot down...

good advice... definitely keep his fluids up... if he gets dehydrated you could be looking at hospitalization and i'm sure you don't want that...
Sorry if i sound all doom and gloom but when my youngest was 4 months old she got sick, she had a little sniffle so i didn't think anything of the low grade temp she had... "being an experienced mom by then" and i thought oh its just a little diarreaha so i just continued to nurse her but after a few days and it didnt go away ...  i decided to take her to the doctor and omg he yelled at me... saying babies go bad quick and you should have brought her in before now and sent us to hospital... at first they couldn't find out what was wrong with her... they ran test after test and finally figured out she had a kidney infection... ... so pedialyte, pedialyte , pedialyte... just to be on the safe side i would give him some every day diarreaha or not just to be on the safe side till it clears up... sure can't hurt to keep his electrolytes up... hope he gets well soon, Jo
It's the difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Lipstick? Where woman? There is no lipstick!
She wasn't kissing your lips my darling

What's it gonna be Merv?
Interesting deal
She'll do it. If she has to kill everyone in this room. She'll do it. She's in love.
*sigh*
It's amazing how the path of love is so alike to the path of insanity
