(This was the closest thread to my question, and I think is relevant to anyone getting, or accessing an SSA account).

A while back, I was forced to change my login to login.gov (for some reason I can't remember, I was unable to use id.me). As part of setting up login.gov, I was provided with a set of 10 single-use codes to use as part of the two-step login.gov process.

I am now down to my last single-use code, and can't figure out how I would obtain another set of 10. I don't want to "waste" the last one, in case I need it to access my SSA account to request another set (in which case, I could end up in a Catch-22 situation if I have no more single-use codes left).

Does anyone know whether this is "automatic"? Will ssa.gov recognise that I have used up my 10 single-use codes and send me a set of replacements? I've serached online, and also looked at the original email transferring me to login.gov, and can find no clues.

What a dilemma.  The extra security added recently applied to all login.gov accounts. I already an id.me account but my wife needed to create one and managed okay, so unfortunately I cannot answer your question but am really interested in the answer.

Phew, figured it out - and you DO need to use an existing one-time code to get another set (so my concerns were warranted). It also looks like, if you have no more single-use codes left, you have to delete your Login.gov account and create a new Login.gov account. How that affects information held in your SSA account (e.g., do you lose historical information?), I don't know.

After a fair bit of going around in circles, I went to the login.gov site (NOT via my ssa account login), and logged in using my email address and password. This does NOT actually get you into your login.gov account, but is the first step in the two-part authentication process. At the bottom of the page there was an option to "get a new set of one-time codes".  This is where I was required to use an existing single-use code, after clicking on the link to get new codes.

All really confusing and I can't imagine how much some people may be totally confused by the process!

So, lesson learned: If you use the two-part authentication process for login.gov, don't use up all of your single-use codes before requesting a new set!

Hmmm, I might try again to get an ID.me account. I presume you can have both? (login.gov and ID.me)? Would be helpful to have a back-up method if one method doesn't work for some reason. I don't really need to access my SSA account very often - no regular maintenance needed, and rarely get secure messages), but this came to a head now because of my recent WEP letter. It took me 6 months to use up the original 10 codes, and that was mostly checking whether I had been WEP'ed each month, or whether I had any WEP updates

I would expect that you can have both.
