Renunciation of US Citizenship
« on: February 11, 2025, 06:56:26 PM »
Hello,

This seems the best forum for my questions...

Has anyone had recent experience with renouncing their citizenship? Among several concerns are:
Is it advisable to do it yourself? We have been faithfully filing US taxes for the 5 years we've been in the UK.
If an advisor is needed, what is a reasonable fee for a married couple with very simple finances?
Without consulting a crystal ball, how much of a possibility that in the future we would not be able to access SSA and IRA's?

Big questions, I know, but a big decision to be made. We can't see going back to the states and having tax obligations is a chore that won't go away.

Thanks

From what I have read here and elsewhere it is not too difficult to do it yourself. Final step is a visit to the US Embassy to sign some paperwork and pay the fee.

If they stop paying SS and allowing IRA withdrawals to USCs overseas then I’m screwed but I can’t see that happening. There are about 4 million of us living overseas.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016
