FBAR filing new login required
« on: February 15, 2025, 11:26:52 AM »
Just spent a good while filing my and my wife's FBAR reports as the system has changed to requiring a login.gov account.

The rest of the process was the same as previous years. I made a copy of the previous year's FBAR pdf file, removed the signature and updated the document with the year 2024, put the account balances in and signed, saved and clicked on validate. However, when it took me to the fincen site to file it required me to login with a login.gov account which I didn't have. I have an id.me account which I use to log into my IRS and SS accounts but not a login.gov account so I had to go all through the process of creating a login.gov account.  After all that I attempted again to file the FBAR but when I tried to use my login.gov account it said my login.gov email did not match my BSA/Fincen email. But I never had an account with Fincen and in any case it would be with the same email I always use and have had for many years.

I then discovered that I could file my pdf the old way.

I then did my wife's FBAR pdf and since she actually already does have a login.gov account it looked like it would work and after logging in successfully it sent me to the BSA/fincen site where it crashed with a load of garbage displayed on the screen.  So I filed her FBAR pdf file the old way as well.

I do have acknowledgements for the filings as usual.

So, if you are filing your FBAR then after completing, signing, saving and validating your pdf you can go to the following url to send it in using the same method as previous years.

Good luck folks.

And how long will it be before Elon Musk and his bunch of teenage trainees seek to get their hands on that data?

Washington Post: Musk and his DOGE team are seeking access to IRS system that contains taxpayer data

Scary times indeed - I might wait until October to file my FBAR!  ;D

Not sure what info he will get from this year’s filing that he won’t get from last year’s filing. Same SSN, same foreign bank account details, just a difference in balances between this year and last.

Sad times.

Maybe he's hoping to find out if I have enough money to buy a Tesla! - which right now is the last car in the world I'd ever consider buying.

Musks' foray into politics could well backfire and kill the goose that laid his golden egg - I'm sure that there are many now who'd rather buy a BYD than a Tesla just out of principle.

At present that goose is still laying eggs for his multiple businesses. Even his Tesla business is getting lots of orders from the US government including a possible $400 million worth of armoured cyber-trucks.

Tesla had already received $41.9 million from the U.S. government, including payment for vehicles provided to some U.S. embassies.

I can't dispute the benefit that Musk gets from Uncle Sam - although given the fickle nature of Trump, who knows if or when Musk will fall out of favour.

I do think that Tesla will see (and is already seeing) a decline in sales in China and Europe - not insignifcant parts of its' global income.

Every day that goes by with DOGE seems to be more and more frightening..............
