Skype is shutting down

Just saw an article go by that Skype is ending services in May, so if you use it to keep in touch you might want to be making plans.

I signed up with Talkatone and got a US number. Costs me £3.49/mo which is very similar to what I am paying for Skype. The process involved signing up, getting a free number for 30 days and then after I had tested that it works okay subscribed through ApplePay to make the number permanent.

Now I have to find out where I have my Skype number registered and change it. Recently we logged onto my wife’s SS online account to check her WEP status and it insisted on her creating a Login.gov account which involved a validation code sent through our US Skype number. I hadn’t even remembered or known that SSA had that number.

Glad you got it managed. Hopefully it works out well for you and you don't have to hop to another provider.  :)

(In case you do, the service I use - Callcentric.com - has been reliable. We've been able to keep the same phone number since the early 2000s and it is pretty much of a similar cost. We got a "dirt cheap" phone number with a Calif prefix and it's been $2.95 a month (while overseas) and a bit more while in-country due to taxes and the needed 911 surcharge (which we could waive if we don't want 911 access on that line). And I pay another $1 for text service, but it doesn't do overseas texts at this time. I had a phone hooked up through our internet while we were in Glasgow and it was nice to hear an "American" phone ring down the hall when someone in the States was calling. Texts are just forwarded to my desktop and I can respond to them from there.)
