SS & Foreign Work Test
« on: September 03, 2025, 08:21:39 PM »
I understand that if you are under FRA and work more then 45 hours a month, then your SS is reduced. Is the reduction a temporary one, where once you reach FRA, the withheld amounts are recalculated back and additional payments made?

I know that in the U.S. there is a $1 deduction for every $2 earned above a certain limit. BUT you get the withheld amount back at FRA. Is it the same for the foreign work test?

I could be mistaken, but I believe that if you work more than 45 hours a month and are overseas and not FRA, you lose the entire SS payment for that month. I don't believe it's temporary - it's gone. (Or I believe that's what I was told when I checked back in 2017.)

If you don't work 45 hours in the following month you would qualify for your full SS payment for that following month.
