Citizenship application question re driving
« on: December 22, 2025, 02:48:53 PM »
Hi all,

I'm completing the citizenship application and have a question related to the driving/penalty history.

Basically, I got a speed camera letter two years ago. The letter offered the speed awareness course, which I took. The course results in no points or fine on driving record. I'm not sure what this means in terms of the citizenship application. Do I report it? I mean, the idea of the speed awareness course is to not have anything on the driving record. But I also am not trying to hide anything.

The application asks: Do you have any other:
•   criminal convictions
•   driving offences
•   outstanding criminal proceedings
•   cautions or fixed penalty notices
•   court judgments

If I choose Yes, it then asks What was the offence? Must choose either:
•   A criminal conviction
•   A penalty for a driving offence, for example disqualification for speeding or no motor insurance
•   An arrest or charge for which you are currently on, or awaiting trial
•   A caution, warning, reprimand or other out-of-court penalty
•   A civil court judgment against you, for example for non payment of debt, bankruptcy proceedings or anti-social behaviour
•   A civil penalty issued under UK immigration law
•   You must tell us about spent as well as unspent convictions. You must tell us about any absolute or conditional discharges you have received for an offence. (Does it fall under this?)

Is it a caution, warning or reprimand or other out of court penalty? It's not a penalty as no fine or points. Was it a caution or warning? If I choose this option then was it:

A conditional caution
An official warning from the police given instead of going to court. You do not need to declare a simple or youth caution. You must declare a conditional caution if received within the last months, unless all the conditions have been met.
A warning or reprimand
A verbal statement that a minor offence has been committed, with no further action taken. A reprimand is a warning given to someone under the age of 18.
A fixed penalty notice
A fine for a minor offence
Other

I have no idea if it was an "official warning from police" or a conditional caution. But if it was a conditional caution, it was more than a few months ago and the conditions were met (ie, speed awareness course).

Or I could choose "other" box? Or just not include it at all and submit a separate letter to them explaining what I got and what I did?

I appreciate your guidance and wisdom. After all these years, I'm still confused by these applications! PS: Apologies for the length of this.

When I did my application I disclosed every little thing I could think of.   Stuff like "speeding ticket for 10 miles above the speed limit in Charlotte NC around 1992"  None of it seemed to matter and I got my UK citizenship with no problem.

Thanks jimbocz. That's my thought too. I'd rather disclose than not.
