Quick, I need opinions on a car!
« on: January 22, 2005, 01:39:41 PM »
I went to look at a VW Golf, 4 door hatchback, red, 1993, automatic. It looks great cosmetically, very clean, inside and out. It drove smoothly, and seems to be in pretty good shape. No outer nicks or anything on it.  Apparently the engine looks good too (hubby says)  Has electrical locks, windows, sunroof, and seat adjustment, which all seem to be in fine working order.  It looks really nice, but the main thing is, it is automatic, and will be a good 'first' car for here, for me to gain confidence driving.

Who has a Golf, and what do you think of them?  I think I am going to buy it,, but want to know what to expect from a VW. Help me decide,,lol

thanks
Tebs

My mother-in-law drives only Golfs and loves them.  I admit I like it when we borrow it.  Parts will more expensive than say a Vauxall.

Tebs,

I can't speak for a Golf but I had two VW Jetta's back in the states (95 & 99) and they were great! I love anything VW...I think overall they have an excellent reputation.  Used cars over here are pretty inexpensive so if you really want it...AND its an automatic that you want (which I think are hard to find over here) then I would say go for it. Especially if you husband checked out the engine and as you said it looks clean and well kept...it sounds like a good buy!

The older Golfs always had a good reputation, much better than the latest models, and servicing and spares shouldn't be too pricey,so if the price is right and you like it, go for it.

I have a 1993 Golf Teri!!! 4 door hatchback... you know, the one I drove you around in!!  ;D I don't have the fancy electrics but we love it! BTW, mine is a 1.8 - what's the one you are looking at? What are they asking for it? We paid about £2700 for our and it had 41,000 miles on it.

I think the price is ok, the guy is asking 1095,, but said he would take off some for a few things we noticed that did need a look at. We were thinking of making an offer of about 925, and see where he takes it from there.  It has 120,000 miles on it as well,, but hubby says that with Golf's engines, they like having a bit of miliage on them. Don't know, lol. Typical girl that I am,, it looks pretty, and clean, runs smoothly, so anything else beyond that I am clueless about,,lol.

Almost posted when I saw B's post,  Yeah?  I wasn't sure what year your car was,, I knew it ws a Golf, but that's all I knew,,lol. Do you think that with the miliage on it,, the price is ok then?  I am really nervous about buying a car, even tho I wanted something reliable, but cheap for my first car here.  It's a 2.0 (whatever that means,, see,, I am clueless,,LOL)

edit, cute pic of merry cloud LOL

I'd say the mileage seems a bit high but that the price is right for that. I've heard many people over here say that VWs just run and run (like they say that about Toyotas in the US). It sound like a reasonable deal to me. 1.8/2.0 is engine size which equals power. I'd never drive anything less than a 1.8 - there's just no get-up-and-go on anything less.

Does it have a valid MOT and if so, how long is it food for? Ours was new when we got it.

MOT and Tax until the end of May.  yeah, I was concerned about the miles on it, but it runs really smoothly. Didnt' make alot of noise or anything. Wish me luck! Going now!

Well, I got it :)  Had a little trouble with the windows all opening when we got it home, and was locking it up,,lol. But after a quick call to the guy we got it from, he told us what to do.  Very exciting to have my own car now, even tho I havn't passed my test yet, I will be ready for the test sooner, rather than later now that I have something to practise in :)

Good for you Tebs!  I had a Jetta I bought back in 1995, my little sister has it now in the US.  It is still going and I have never had any major problems.  Good Luck with your test.

Yeah Tebs!!! How exciting is that? You're on your way to a bit more freedom now!

I am so silly,, when we got home, and I was hugging hubby and thanking him for helping me with chosing what car to get, I actually got weepy, and he even wiped a tear,,LOL.  We had a friend of his pick us up, and go look at it a second time, to make sure that objective eyes didnt' see anything we may have missed, then we were able to drive it home :)  In the end, we got it for exactly 1000.00.  It's in very good condition, but will still taking it to a friend who runs a garage to have him  check things out that we think may need tweaking.
Oh, and it is a 1.8, not 2.0,, I was mistaken about that,, but that's fine by me, I wouldn't know the difference anyway,,lol.

It DOES represent independance and freedom to me,, I can't wait to get my license now, and will be driving all over the place  ;D

Oh Teri I'm sooooooooooooooooooo jealous. I had a Golf in the US and I miss that damn car so much I can't stand it - it was unbelievably reliable no matter how much I abused it - caused me next to no trouble, got great mileage and was super safe. I keep telling J that I want another one ASAP! Give your new baby a kiss for me! LOL.

Glad you got your car !
One thing you might like to think about regarding the driving test.  If you take it in an automatic you will be permitted to drive automatics only. If you take it in a manual, you can then drive both.
