I have no idea. What I was going to say was that the best thing about Brighton is that you can have your groceries delivered - for free!

I think it's regional in the US. I have lived in several big cities and never had to bag my own, unless they were short staffed or moving too slow for me :)

I know a Pay As You Go phone in the States you get charged when someone calls you where in the UK when someone calls you on a Pay As You Go phone it doesn't cost you anything.

In the U.K., incoming calls to a mobile phone don't normally cost you anything whatever the plan.  But the caller pays more to call a mobile phone than to call a regular landline.

On the tail of Minday, I'm also doing a bit of cutting & pasting tonight to get some off topic things in their own places, all apologies if I honk anyone off by doing it, mess anything up, split the wrong conversations or whatnot. :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

"Ask your british beloved to say "boogie woogie" -- as in the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company D... I fall over in giggles every time...."

This amuses the heck out of me, too. Out of all things that are different, why this one? Who knows.

To keep on topic:

They don't have to give you a space in school for your children in the geographically closest school. Kids often travel quite a bit by themselves to get to secondary school.

Same for me here in the US, they always bag for us but I prefer to do it on my own so I had no issues in the UK when they didn't bag for me.

We have several big reusable bags from M&S that we use.

You bag your own at most places in the US I've shopped.

That hasn't been the case in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Maine, Alaska, Florida, Michigan, Vermont and New Hampshire, including all the major chains (Target, Walmart), regional grocers (HEB, Hannaford, Winn Dixie) and small independents. Jewlz is right.

Jewlz is right.

Let's let this go now.  It's probably a regional thing and everybody is right.  Move along, people.

Sending short workplace emails results in offence being taken, and you can't tell someone to do something directly.  For example:

US:
"I need you to photocopy the latest report"

UK:
"Hi xxxx,

Hope you're well.  Would you mind making me a photocopy of the latest report when you have a minute?

Best,
XXXX

I've had a few American friends complain to me about that cultural difference!

I work in customer service at a garden centre and it does my head in to hear

"Do you work here?  Can I ask you a question?" over and over in the day.

I'm wearing the damn shirt.  Just ask the damn question.

I really really really want to one day just say "No.  In fact, I'd prefer it if you'd just leave now."

But I do like my job, and know that it's just people being polite.   :)
...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...
