What a great board!
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:54:21 PM »
I'm so glad I stumbled on this forum -- anything I know about living in London I learned here or by listening to the Smiths as a disgruntled youth.

So it looks like my wife and I will be moving to London this Fall.  I'm a baby lawyer (just graduated last year), and it's nearly certain that I'm going to jump over to my firm's London office.   We're very excited about this move --- my wife and I each lived in Europe before we met, and we've always wanted to live overseas together.

The one hitch is that I've never been to London (other than passing through the airport).  I'm not too concerned about liking the place --- I'm sure that the city will be what we make of it.  I'm mostly concerned about where to live, as I think I'll have to choose housing later this summer during a very short trip by myself.  As such, I'd love to do research now and get things narrowed down a bit before I go.

If I give you the specs, will you give me some ideas?

---There will be 4 of us next fall --- wife, myself, almost-3 year old, newborn---we probably need a 3-bedroom flat
---My wife will stay at home, so we want to be close to parks, places to walk, near other young families, good access to seeing the rest of the City (we'll be live-in tourists, since we've never been there)
---I'll be working in EC2, and I'd like to be no more than 20-25 minutes away.
---Probably something more "established" than "emerging."  We lived in "emerging" for 3 years in Chicago (and LOVED it), but I think with 2 kids now, we won't have the same energy that is required to find all the hidden gems and really enjoy such a place
---That being said, we're not the types who value brand-name for the sake of
---It's all rough right now, but we could probably pay £1200-1800 per month

I'm dizzy from excitement just thinking about all of this.

Good point.  I wasn't quite sure where the best place was for this stuff.  I'll just cross-post it myself.

Thanks for the welcome!

Well, i live in marylebone, a stone's throw from Regent's park (which i love) as well as Hyde Park.  You could look in South Kensington/Kensington and be near the Kensington Palace side of Hyde park.......  3 BR for 1800 will be a tough find, but do able.

Good luck, it's a great city and i can't sing the praises of West London enough.  The husband and i were just strolling through Kensington the other day, doing a bit of shopping and walked by the palace, and it's times like that you realize what a magical place this is.

the rental market is pretty down at the moment. I know someone who just got a 2 BR flat, originally 430 a week for 340 a week (with heat) in Kensington......so, if you're up to negotiating it's doable!
