It's supposedly the same up here in Edinburgh.  I knew a former expat who went to a couple of the functions, but it was all trailing spouses with lots of time and money on their hands and she didn't quite fit in.

That sounds like something my mom's friend's DIL would belong too!  She was a trailing Spouse, and a lady who still lunches!!!

My thoughts exactly. When I first moved here years ago, I joined up with the AWBS (Berkshire/Surrey). After a couple of meetings, I found I had absolutely NOTHING in common with these women. Only bright spot was being somewhat a nerd, I worked with the website team for a year- but then again, all us nerds stick together..LOL

I'm going by the women  (20 and 30 something's) I know with no kids who retired after they married and shop and lunch and go to the gym!!!  This is a common thing in NYC!  Maybe I'm just jealous of them. (I don't think so though!)

I don't know about you, but I know several million £££ stands missing between me and most of the members of the club in Edinburgh.

Yes Pebbles! We'd all love to be lunching ladies but from what I understand, most of the trailing spouses are rather well to do. It's a pretty rich set from what I hear.

No offense to anybody who is of course!  ;D

BTW, if anyone knows otherwise, please correct me!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

May I suggest that those American ladies in London (and other parts of the UK) who feel the need to be in a club like that, but know they won't fit in with the brat-class ladies start thier own club?  There must be loads of women who feel uncomfortable in a snooty ladies club but would LOVE to join up with a down-to-Earth, "real" womans club with WORKING women....?

That would be a good idea, but it is just hard for women who have children because they have so many responsibilities.  It is easier if you are rich enough to hire help.

Spouses who always follow behind named dominant spouse.

;)

I think  you might want to add 'prominent' spouse as well.  because a lot of us  trailed our husbands  here..  but I get the feeling that  since most of us  DIDN'T marry for  the money as well.   ((pppuuhh  llleeeaasee.. ;D ;D)  makes it diferent!!

So who wants  to start it?  monthly lunches  at someone's  house  for  the  day people.. (it can vary so every part of England  can get coverage)   walks  for the weekend  people..  nights  out maybe once a month..?  how    about  a  book club and whoever hosts  it decides  where and when...and ultimately the book  )after taking considerations  of course)??

Should we call it "Real  Women  don't  eat quiche" ??    :P :P  (or hire  help to make it!!)

Don't we already have a 'real' American Ladies club right here on UKY?  I mean most of the members are women, we arrange meet-ups, share/seek advice, play games, have a book club and I dare say a few of us lunch whilst chatting on UKY.

Now, I'm rather biased, but I think UKY is the best American women's club in the UK.   ;)

Just wanted to add that stay at home moms are indeed working moms also. Probably the hardest working women and we dont even get paid for it. Well we get paid in reward I suppose but a check would be nice once in awhile!
