Trouble getting NIN number?
« on: February 02, 2005, 08:14:38 PM »
Hello! I'm married to a Brit and we're planning on moving to the UK next year. The one snag is that when we were dating, I visited him in the UK and overstayed (for quite a bit). I've heard that the NIN interview is even more detailed than the visa interview and that they want details of all travel in/out of the country ever. Will I have a problem b/c of my overstay? Thanks for the help!

My NIN interview was really just a review of paperwork ie bank statements, etc. They never even looked past the ILR Visa in my passport. I didnt even consider it an interview.

You'll find that experiences vary from office to office.  I had to give exact details of all my UK entries and exits.

I would assume, though, that if you've been granted a spousal visa, that sort of "overrides" your previous visits (i.e., if overstaying wasn't a problem for your spousal visa application, it shouldn't be one for an NIN interview).

Yes, my NIN interview was easy but I have heard of others that were very difficult. However, if you already have your spousal visa, that comes with a letter from the Home Office that says you are entitled to work.

And bear in mind that you do NOT need to have a job/job offer before you get your NIN. Some offices seem to think this is the case and I'm pretty certain it's not.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Just to sort of add to balmerhon's post, I didn't think you needed to have an offer ahead of time either, but I checked on the UK social security site (I think that's where I checked) and it said you DID need to have an offer first. I think it does depend on the office and location. It can't hurt to call the local office to find that out.

Also, I didn't receive a letter from the HO with my visa so for those who are outside the UK when they apply, don't think your mail didn't show up. I have yet to hear anyone from a consulate in the US getting one.

You can use this link and print out the documentation from the HO for proof of your work entitlement.

Thanks Haunted.  :)  I should clarify that I was told I did not need to have an offer, BUT I did need to show that I was actively looking.

At the time I was living in semi-rural Kendal. I think if you're in a city you find the offices a bit more high maintenance.

This is good to know. I live in a relatively small town and although I am sure they are not aware of all the rules, they may be apt to listen. I'll try to get an interview myself now on that information. I'd rather NOT be taxed with the high rate to start off.
