My Sister's Keeper
« on: February 06, 2005, 03:45:29 PM »
I checked this out from the library yesterday morning and finished it around noon today. It's so riveting!!

It's about a girl who was conceived because her sister needed a blood marrow transplant and there were no matches. At the age of 13, having been 'harvested' from numerous times throughout her life and facing having to give up a kidney for her ailing sister, she sues her parents for rights to her own body.

I won't say too much about plot but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Who else has read it?

Is it based on a true story?  Sounds interesting!

It's a novel, but the author, Jody Picoult, seems to be a bit famous for basing novels on current social issues.

One great thing about the book is its mode of narration. Characters take turns narrating each chapter, and sometimes they recount things from their own point of view. I found the chapters narrated by Jesse, the all but forgotten eldest child, very moving.

has anyone thought of having   a reading group??  Maybe meeting once a month  at a  central location  (i.E.  a restaurant  or  cafe)  or someone's house..  we can take  turns..  whoever is hosting can pick the book .. or People can  PM  him/ her  and final selection will be made.. People  can  communicate  what works best  schedule wise.. this way  we can know  a  month in advance  what we  are reading..  where  we  are going.. and what time we  will be meeting... (and if we  have  to  bring something  like snacks  or if it's a  theme party.. like  hallowen  or princesses.. or whatever.. ;D ;D :D  we can dress appropriately..  ;)
just curious  if anyone is interested..  this way we can read  more.. get to meet more People and  be a bit more familiar with england..  KIT!!

I may have to pick this up - it does seem rather timely (though I won't say which side of the issue I'm on... :-X  ;)  ).

But *after* I read The Time Traveller's Wife!!!!  ::)

Oh, you must, must, must read it, Peedal!! Carla - this sounds really good! I have a two-book back-up right now but I think i'll add this one to the list.
