Hi Dee, I know exactly how you feel. My legal battle last year was employment based and I found myself totally alone, the few friends I had in England couldn't understand what I was going through and I couldn't even bring myself to get in touch with a solicitor out of fear they would turn down my case. That actually happened many times but I found the strength somewhere not to take the opinion of one solicitor as given but kept looking until I found one. I contacted a national helpline for people with employment issues who worked on a no win no fee basis. In the end, about 32% of my compensation went into their pocket but it was important for me to have someone representing my interest against the employer.

I remember last year still very vividly, the symptoms were the same like you described: unablility to focus on anything, racing mind and the feeling of being helpless and misunderstood. As suggested here before, your best start is your local Citizen Advice Bureau. They will listen to you and hopefully tell you what options you have. I know that at this point you will probably feel totally overwhelmed with everything and would like nothing more than someone to come around and take this burden off you. I urge you to take all the energy you've left and put it into getting this help. I can't describe the relief I felt the moment I got the call from the solicitor telling that they would take on my case.

Most of the information I retrieved through excessive searches on the web, here are some links you might want to check out:

Bar Pro Bono Unit - legal assistance for deserving cases that don't qualify for legal assistence or where the applicant is unable to afford legal services;
Community Legal Services Direct - provide a link to solicitors in specific areas of law, some provide free consultation, others charge a small fee;
Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - caused by bullying, harassment and abusive life experiences (the info might help you recognize what's been going on with you and might be a basis for a claim);
Hodge, Jones, Allen Solicitors - solicitor firm that deals with Personal Injury and Human Rights' issues (i.e. complaints against the police), they will discuss funding options (legal aid etc);
Russell, Jones and Walker - solicitor firm;
Advice Now - generell info about all sorts of UK laws and your rights;
Bindmann & Partners - solicitor firm with specialists in Human Rights (abuse of police power) and Personal Injuries;
Legal Services Commission - legal help, advice and funding;
The Law Centres Federation - searchable database for law centres in the UK, these centres provide free and independent professional legal service.

This is all I could find for now and I hope that any of these can help you. Don't give up, and keep in touch!

This story is unbelievable, but doesn't surprise me.  I was born in the UK and have a massive mistrust of the police, for example my nephew was charged with a major crime and after 2 1/2 year on remand and a nine month trial it was thrown out because it was proved that the police had hidden vital files from the defence team.  Things like this happen all the time.

I realise that you thought you had nothing to hide and I sincerely feel for you but I would advise anybody in a simular situation to ALWAYS demand for a search warrent.  This makes the police prove they have grounds for a search.

Rules have been broken here and the Police should be made accountable.

Best of luck

Steve

Hi Steve,

thanks for the post, and I agree with you, that was a mistake made once, I can assure you, once too many unfortunatley. Your poor nephew, I don't even think O.J. Simpsons trial took that long.
Its like they all have this twisted, sick disease, in which great pleasure is derived from ruining peoples lives.  You know my husband tried warning me before I came over, but in all honesty, I didnt believe it nor would I expect anyone else to. You have live here a while, and than over time you start paying attention, taking note of things etc. I remember last year I started to really notice all the suicides in the paper, It was like an epidemic. I'm glad your nephews case got thrown out. Those s.o.b's, didnt get away with that one Bravo. Did anything happan to them, how did they proove they had the files? However or whoever, I'm happy for his outcome. Its completley debilitating, and very disheartning. As soon as i'm able i'm outta here, I can't live where I don't feel safe.  Ive never seen such coldness, and cruelty in people against they're own,for no logical reason but enjoyment.

This is where the coruption gets worse.  The two policeman concerned were suspended and the judge gave my newphew and the EIGHT on trial with him grounds to sue.  However one of the suspended policeman was allowed to return to work for 1 DAY and then retired and in doing got his pension.  This behaivour was slammed by the court and made the papers BUT there is nothing they can do about it now he has offically left the force.  The person who let him get away with this was the Chief Super so the coruption goes right to the top.

I have no idea if the US is any better but the UK system stinks and the very thought of getting rid of trial by jury (something they are thinking about) scares me to death.  BTW the trial alone cost £25 MILLION.

Is every policeman bent - no - but the few who are like the ones in my nephews and your case give the whole force a bad name
