John Lewis or Dixons? Ebay or Pricerunner? HELP!
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:39:33 PM »
Okay, very childish, I know.

I cannot decide.

I am finally purchasing a tv of my own.  Hurrah.

John Lewis has some nice tvs, all ntsc compatible, but sells no multi regional dvd players.

Dixons does.

Do I get the tv at JL and the dvd at Dixons?  Or both at Dixons?

There doesn't seem to be a big difference in delivery; as I would need to pay a bit more either way to specify a time (silly me, preferring to know when they're delivering it so I can be there!)...

Suggestions?

how are their warantees?

we've bought stuff at JL.  I like them......but i'm sure dixons is ok too.  I guess i'd want to have it all delivered in one go!

PS: a lot of DVD players don't advertise being multi region.  We got one as a gift, cost about 45£ and we had to do some funky programming....and it now runs multi region!  it was printed on the box how to do it!  LOL.

Ditto Aimiloo...Check the warranty options. We are ordering a washer from John Lewis this week because they are the only place that offers a 2 year warranty at no extra cost. We also checked pricerunner and were pleasantly surprised to see that for the machine we want (an AEG) they also had the best price!

We got our multi-region DVD from Amazon very cheaply.

I'm home most days so delivery times aren't as much of an issue.

Dixions: I've bought computers, scanners, clock radios and walkmans from Dixons. Every time, there's been a dumb technical hitch, and every time, sorting out the problem has brought me face-to-face with appalling customer service. Dixons staff are, in my experience, ignorant and unhelpful. It's a bad, bad place.

John Lewis
:  a happy place, safe and reliable. I've bought a kettles, iron, hairdryer (not for my own bald head), eletric blanket, a microwave, and food processor. Never had a problem. The staff have been generally helpful and knowledgeable, and the microwave delivery was on time.

For the DVD player, I got a multi-region player from Amazon a couple of years ago for £30, and it's worked fine.

Ps. Dixons suck in the most unholy way. Did I mention that?

Hmmm, Elizabeth, given the customer service issues you have already noted so well in the bagging thread (which I wholeheartedly agree with!!).... I'd give Dixons a wide bearth!! I have to agree with the above!!  ;D

Done.
JL it is.
Plus, just noticed:  they include a 2 year warranty, and it's much less to specify the delivery.

Thank you!

You can probably get it all cheaper at Argos! Go to somewhere like Dixons and try it all out. When you know what you want, go to Argos.  That's what I did with my stereo and I saved about £60.

I agree with BW, why throw money out the window? JL is the last place I'd shop for electricals, and before going to Dixons, I'd check out Comet or Curry's (if high street at all), they both also offer special web offers on their site, lower priced than in the store. Besides Argos, even Tesco offer TV's not too shabbily priced.

I bought my TV 2 years ago from a web store that came up on a search at Kelkoo's price check site. Haven't had any problems. Plus, most stores offer extended warranties too.

They don't have the tv I want at Argos; I did find an online shop that in total is £50 cheaper than John Lewis, but I've never ordered from something like that before... and will need to call to make sure they have it in stock before I pay for it (many customer reviews saying that's the only downside).
I GOTTA have a TV before the OSCARS!!  And of course, before the BAFTAS would be nice too.

I've had countless problems with Argos. And I doubt they have the 2 year warranty that you don't have to pay extra for. That's the key for me! I've also had terrible probs with Comet and Currys regarding returns/service.

I find shopping at Argos to be a grim experience. If it's something easy - batteries, leads - that they can't screw up, I'll chance it for a bargain. Anything more complicated, after a couple of big disappointments, I'm not taking the risk. (Happy, of course, if others have had a more positive experience).

E, they have a multi Regional DVD players on Amazon for like £29.  Richard just got a little one for the bedroom for about £50, not sure where though.

I bought my TV on Tottenham Court Road.. just walked in to a place and bought a TV.  They delivered it the next day but I think I had to pay 15 quid for delivery.  It was worth it as I had no way to get it home.  My region-free DVD player is from Amazon and it was maybe 40 quid, delivered to my door the next day.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Buying on the web is not a bad thing.  I did it all the time back in the States.  In general, I would go to any normal store to ook at the product I would like to buy and would read reviews of the product on-line and buy on-line.

A good site that I have found for the UK is dealtime.co.uk.  It compares a lot of the on-line web sites and gives customer reviews of purchases, service etc. for each site and a ranking.
